I broke 2 axles over 2 years with my 6 Cup. I was running the cheaper black axle. One broke during the sprint race at Daytona, one in a warm up at Road Atlanta. Both times from bounding over curbs under WOT.

Couple of options:

1) The blue axles are made of a rather brittle steel. Plenty of strength, but they crack and snap in half MUCH sooner than the black axles do. In fact the black axles seem to take a very, very long time to fatigue crack and break. The blue axles come with the joints packed in really good grease. This is a major improvement over the old grease used in the black axles. The new grease all but eliminates CV joint failures.

A pair of black axles is about $1400
A pair of blue axles is about $5000
2 lbs of good grease is about $250
4 hrs labor is about $400.
You do the math.

Occaisionally you get a car and driver combo that will ruin even repacked black axles prematurely (usually joint failure due to excessive angle). Cartridge Ltd. can provide axles to overcome this. They are quite expensive but seem to be final solution.

2) Perhaps things have changed, but on the '99 Cup we replaced the half shafts with 993 TT half shafts. They were significantly cheaper - around $400 a side if I am remembering that correctly.

Andy:

Tires / Wheels shipped yesyerday. Will get you a tracking #.

Best bet financially is to run the 993/996TT axles and keep two new ones as spares. At the end of the season or at least every 30-40 hours replace with new ones and keep old ones as spares.

Dont bother x-raying them.

If you use the TT axles, take them apart and replace the grease with a good quality grease like Neo or Krytox. The CVs will last much longer.

Roger that Geoffrey. JR has set on order from SSF then they are going to be Kryotexed. Then we'll examine the ones on the car and possibly rebuild them for spares or use them for dumbells

Seems odd to me that these relatively low torque GT3's are breaking the metal axles. What do they use in powerful cars like GT1 Corvettes???

It's the sprint starts that do them I think. And the curbs! In my GT3 RS they last longer, presumably because it's all rolling starts
