Default Air Pump Alternative

Others have covered when / why / how the two secondary air pumps on the V8's are removed / installed.

I am sharing a cheaper alternative to the $200 replacement (each) when buying factory original parts. Savings is about $250 when replacing both.

The process involves the following:

- Remove both air pumps and unscrew all screws that you see.
- Order one of the following part numbers, all from the early 2000's Chevy Camaro:
- Dorman 306010*(this is the one I went with, and based my $250 savings number off of)
- AC DELCO 215414
- CARDONE 323501m
- Swap over original wiring harnesses.
- Re-assemble using original front covers.
- Re-install "refurbished" air pumps.

That's a nice, low cost alternative. Thanks very much for posting.

Just curious, but how do you know when your air pumps are shot? What are the symptoms?

Disregard above. Answered my own question: https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-...k-2-fault.html

What does an air pump do? Does the V6 have it?

It's an emissions related device that blows air into the exhaust stream on cold start-ups to dilute pollutants. Pretty useless if you ask me, but required nonetheless to pass emissions inspections in most states.

V6 has one, not two of these, and probably a VW part shared with the V6 Touareg. Not sure if they are as prone to failure as the ones on the V8's.

Yea, they only run for about 1 minute on a cold startup. When you start your Pig cold and it idles slightly high, they air pumps are running. When it kicks down to a normal idle is the same time the Air pumps shut off. If you do the tail pipe sniff emsissions you can pass without them as you are always warmed up when you do it and they're not running. If you do the OBDII scan you will fail if you have a SAI code. I removed the (Single) Air pump on my Audi RS6 and had a custom software done by Eurocharged which included coding out the SAI system as well as the Secondary O2's. No codes and it passes emissions (OBDII Scan).
