Post To Dip or Strip

Have any of you had your track cars chemically stripped?

I can't seem to gather enough information to see if I should have it done.

I've heard some complain that the chemical solution "oozes" forever and it'll continue to screw up any coating that goes on after. Then again, a bunch of people also complain about trying to grind or strip off that nasty undercoating.

If it works (like Redi Strip in PA) then I'd rather mess with the trek to PA than a month of never-ending grinding.

Just had my new tub acid dipped, looks great. I'm told the acid is neutralized and rinsed, so there should not be any "oozing" . Powder coating will take place in the next few weeks, after welding and modification is complete, so I won't know if there are any problems for some time.
Sure beats the heck out of , stripping, scraping, grinding, peeling.....etc !
BTW, Gordon at Autometrics has had a few cars acid dipped in his time, you may want to give him a call.

Thanks Howard...

I actually got the idea from the yellow car on the Autometrics page. Very nicely done.

My track/race car was acid dipped. Never saw or heard of any oozing of the dip solution.

I had a '66 'vette roadster dipped to prepare it for a concourse restoration project. I had no "Ooze" the car came out great. far and away the best way to start a restoration. I'm finishing up a 911-911RS Clone project right now. Because I started with a very rusty 911T, the car will never be a "Showable" example. I decided that it was not worth the cost of dipping the car. I wish I had dipped it, I spent litterally days with an assortment of wire wheels removing rust, paint, undercoating, and sealant. What a grimmy and dirty job! The end result doesn't even compare to my experience with dipping cars. I'll never do anything but dipping again to any car I do again. Good luck

I am fixing to have my '86 944 dipped. Around how much did this cost? My body guy hasn't gotten me the estimate for it yet and I wanted to see if his price was "reasonable".

Do it.

Thanks guys, I thought it was the way to go. I am still waiting on the estimate. He is trying to find a shop locally (Memphis TN area) but it looks like we may have to send the car to Jackson MS to have it done.

I have also considered the acid strip for my car. I have heard concerns regarding acid remaining in crevices that would continue to corrode causing rust. Specifically, this was mentioned by a friend that is building a 32 Plymouth street rod. He is a race car fabricator by trade and opted to dip his 32 so I guess it was not that big of a deal to him after all.

My understanding is that once the car is dipped in the acid solution it is then dipped in a acid neutralizing solution.

Does dipping cause any problems with the galvanized coating on the 944's?
