Aside from the actual point of the article, these metrics are pretty crazy:
91% of US Porsche owners are also iPhone owners.
He said: "We will offer Android solutions. Why aren't we doing that right now? Let's take a look at the United States. Ninety-one percent of our customers, Porsche customers have an Apple device. So, this is how you most efficiently invest your money.
I don't buy it, When I was waiting to pick up my car I asked one of the other people in the waiting area about Android Auto who didn't know but also had an Android phone, turns out of the 5 of us there 3 were Android and 2 were iphone. Anecdotal for sure but those numbers claimed in that article are far too high to be believed; I'd have to see the data and where and how it was obtained. Once I did I'm pretty sure I'd find it to be largely made up or the sampling fatally biased and/or flawed.
Well, the older you are, the higher your income, the higher your education and if you use your phone for work, the more likely you are to own an iPhone. US market is more like about 50/50 for IOS versus Android where worldwide, Android dominates with almost 90%. In developed countries, iPhone is more prevalent. It still remains the device people "want" but Android remains the device people can afford thanks to all of the low cost variants that Apple does not pursue. It is interesting that Porsche cites a figure as high as 91%. Most organizations where there are a lot of highly educated folks (healthcare), I have found that number to be more like about 75% or higher for iPhone devices thanks to the more controllable experience for a work environment and the ability to afford that device. The largest demographic segment in the US for Android devices, thanks to affordability, is those with less than a high school education, which makes sense. I am still surprised that the demographics of a Porsche owner are as high as 91% swayed to the iPhone but, I suppose, if you buy a luxury car, you are likely more image conscious than most.
I don't believe the 90% stat either. I had an Andriod that I resisted switching away from for years. Finally after 2 Porsche cars, it made the switch less painful.
Maybe, right there, is the answer. People have actually switched to the iPhone to have it work in the Porsche and only 9% are choosing not to switch and holding out with their Android.
Nah, the numbers are untrue, pretty sure. I can look around me and my brother (MBA), sister (MD), sister (JD), sister (BA) all android. On the other hand at night I lay down next to an economics professor who does run an iphone. She is Russian though so I forgive her little eccentricities like having to place empty wine bottles on the floor. I do understand that the numbers are roughly split in the US and that both higher education and income equate to higher ownership of the iphone. Got no problem with any of that or that the numbers are substantially higher than average with Porsche. I do have a problem with circular quoting of what will eventually become "facts". Try and find a study done by a credible source showing such a high ownership percentage among Porsche owners even after allowing former android users to switch and you're going to have a hard time. I just spent about 20 minutes doing it and came up dry; just a bunch of websites cross posting each other based on what one executive said in an interview without any support for the claim.
I notice Zellmer said that Android Auto solutions are coming thanks to China. Those with good memories will recall that they had been in negotiations with Google before but couldn't agree on the data and money split. My guess would be this is the real reason it isn't in the car now and the 90% thing is just the excuse they're flogging as to why a lot of people cant get what they want.
I have Navi on board and bluetooth connect with my Droid. I dont see the need for the car play thing, What am I missing??
Besides this house is an Android phone house lol, as I type this on a Imac.
As was mentioned, doesn't Google require what Porsche say is an excessive amount of user data to be returned to them? I would think that, and the probable contract issues as a result, has more to do with the lack of Android Auto integration than any other factors.
As I read a comment elsewhere recently, Google is an advertising company that sometimes pretends to be a technology company. Porsche may not want to give up driver data, even in aggregate, to a company who may move more directly into the automobile space at some point. Apple has all but declared their car initiative dead, and is now championing privacy as a selling point as their competitors make mistake after mistake with user data.
Not a chance I'd switch ecosystems, most I know in the real world wouldn't either and that's going both ways. I do know a few that will go back and forth but not many. I've never seen numbers for that (from a credible source that has no agenda Poking) and it would be interesting.
Can someone Please tell me about this unique life changing experience that is called Apple car play. As I said above with Navi on board and bluetooth connect what else am I missing.
Can't speak for others but in my case I would like to get Waze up on the bigger screen at times and a related factor is that it's nice to voice in an address and have it actually work the first time every time. I seldom use navigation though and I find the stock infotainment works well once you set up your favorite stations and all that stuff so I don't have much of a use case for Android Auto or it's competitor. For me it would just offer an extra option that will rarely be used but appreciated at those times. For the regular commuting without a destination I just put the phone on maps and it will voice the speed traps which I prefer since that leaves the PCM free for other tasks. Some of this though distills down to the fact that you have to plug it in to use it and I don't like that, I might have used it more often if it had owned and used it in a car where you didn't have to do that.
