A few weeks ago I picked up a CPO 2015 GTS. Loving the car so far, the exhaust note is addictive!
I hadn’t driven the car in reverse until I went to back out of my garage. I immediately noticed that the backup camera is total crap. The image is grainy, distorted and the colors are almost nonexistent. Is this normal for a 970.2? I hope not!
Here’s a quick shot of the camera view vs actual view.
Yes, backup camera quality has improved greatly in the last 4-5 years. The backup camera image quality on my wife's 2014 Volvo is even worse. That said, the purpose of the camera is to identify the presence of objects. The resolution is generally sufficient for that (except perhaps at night in the rain).

I could get over the quality and color scale issues, but the object distortion makes it difficult to judge proximity to the objects.
I've been a long time BMW owner and off the bat I would say their camera quality is leaps and bounds better - even the older tech.
E.g. 2015 BMW 2 series...
The Panny more than makes up for it in other area, just a bit surprised that even for 2015 this was deemed good by Porsche standards.
Coming from my 2011 550i, and my wife's Atlas, the 970.2 surround cameras just aren't very good. The video quality is really poor. I also drove a 970.2 GTS with surround cameras, and the quality was the same.
This is the worst thing about my car, I think. I'll survive just fine, but it's certainly disappointing compared with make other options.
Is anyone able to share a photo of their backup camera in action? I’d like to see if I have a warranty claim on my hands or if this is as good as it gets.
The green grass showing up as tan as tan leads me to believe something is wrong.
NikkiSixxPA, Your image appears more squished than in my 2011 Panny. Yes, my image is much poorer than in my wife's 2004 Toyota Sienna. What bugs me is sometimes I have to go back and thump on the camera housing to get it to work. Must be a very micro-fine connection issue, but not worth paying the dealer to fix. $$
It looks like your display is split between showing the sonar front/rear signals and the backup camera, making the backup image very squished. ?? If so, maybe you can change it to just show the backup camera when backing up.

Reason: wanted to add additional info to consider
Also the poor image quality will not be improved much by a camera with higher resolution because even if the camera has a higher resolution, the PCM 3.1 display can only show 7xx by 5xx pixels of that.
