Not to crap in the 350R thread, but a buddy has been forwarding me pics of a gorgeous metallic gray ZL1 1LE a local dealer got yesterday here in DFW. Supposed to be one of the first in the area. My buddy's friend is service manager there.
Price? Sticker at $73k, no markup. Trying to get my buddy to buy it before I do. It's gorgeous and really looks like racecar.
Anyway, hope the ZL1 1LE pressures GT350R prices down to sticker very soon.
I saw the regular ZL1 at the GP this year and I thought it looked pretty good from the outside. Like many have said - they are hard to see out of. It's a strong engine but not very interesting to me.
healthy competition, loved my 16 gt350, can't wait for the next one
Ford already benchmarked the current GT350 against the 991.1 GT3 during their original development. From the look of those photos, the newest Halo Ford Mustang (GT500 or whatever it will be called) is still testing against the old GT3. But Porsche has already moved the goal posts with the new 991.2 GT3, as has Chevy with the Camaro ZL1 1LE. Ford has their work cut out, healthy competition does improve all breeds!
With the expected HP increase - if they can still do well vs GT3 handling characteristics, it's going to be a monster. No need to match the latest GT3, imo...it will do the rest in the straights.
Other possibility is simply they already have a known benchmark on the GT3 which they own. Any improvement will just be a plus.

I'm getting close to buying some type of American muscle car. I really want a GT350R but the asking prices are too high. The ZL1 1LE looks like a great alternative.

Don't think you can go wrong with either option. If you can live with the lessor hp the Camaro SS 1LE is also a great car that can be had for $40k.
I drove a Z06 and 350R last week. Haven't driven the 1LE yet but the 350R was more enjoyable to drive. Not nearly as fast, but for me, a more engaging and soulful car.

Test drive whatever you're considering and buy with your eyes wide open.
Even though the "numbers" for some of these American cars = GT350/R, Z28, 1LE, ..., ACR are great, but once you get used to the NVH, feel, smell, ride, ..., fit & finish of premium cars such as Porsche it makes it hard to step backwards. IMO.
Recently picked up my GT350R and am very impressed with it. Reminds me of my previous GT3(997.1) but much newer with an even better sound track. It's really about the entire package as it works so well together! Mine only has 450 miles so haven't experienced 8250 yet and can hardly wait for Laguna Aug 21st to run her a bit.
Such smooth progressive power and joy to drive. Getting a lot of thumbs up and love notes on windshield- too funny!
