The mustang has completely changed its appearance many times. I see virtually no design clues that have carried through the various versions.
Dodge, on the other hand, did a fantastic job of modern retro with the Challenger.
Here's some pix to illustrate:

The retro Challenger is equivalent to the S197 Mustang. The S550 Mustang is a next-gen that has no counter from Challenger yet. Will they? Can they? Remains to be seen.
The 911 remains an iconic classic. The Mustang has always been there, for better or for worse. The Challenger, no. A one-time rehash of a former design does not equate to a success of continuity.

It would be interesting to see a revival of the original Trans Am series now the three big players all have decent and similar cars.

Corvette is another good example of a car that keeps evolving, rather than springing from one design to another. As different as they are from one another, one can clearly see the lineage from a 1968 Stingray to a 2014 Stingray.

The car should be dynamically better with the IRS and lighter, stiffer chassis. Looks wise, it's like going from a C5 to C6 Corvette. We were hoping for more like a C6 to C7 design wise.

Great and good to know.
got it already, Continental Tire Challenge Series. Only racing on TV I'll stop and watch the whole thing. Great mix that also includes Astons, 911 ( not GT3 ), Camaros, Mustangs, etc. Real cars racing and it's good stuff. Texas Rider needs to come along. Bought one of the "Gotta Have it Green" Mustang Boss last year. That one has the solid axle but has nothing but f good to say. This one will be even better with the IRS.

If you want a 400 hp 2+2 coupe with a manual and RWD there aren't many choices.
The 911 and Mustang are two options that come to mind. I'm excited to see the next Boss 302.

I'm not a Mustang guy, but I saw some profile shots of the new model that looked pretty sharp. Bigger question is how well it will drive, though. I know there's plenty of cheap mods for power, but in day-to-day driving I just wasn't very excited by the last one I drove.
But then, I am a spoiled and entitled S.O.B.
