They make a great rolling barbecue.

My wife had an old Pinto when she was in HS; her dad told me he painted a bulls-eye on the back of it.

Top Secret obscure? That is the best role of Val Kilmer's career. That picture took low-brow humor to a new low, it's great!
As for Pintos, a friend and I autocrossed for a few years about 20 years ago, me in a 510, him in a Pinto, both '72's. Seam welding is a big part of stiffening things and preventing the spot welds from splitting (on both cars). The Ford 2300 IS a fantastic engine, with extensive aftermarket support. My friend (an engineer) went way further "developing" his car, but he never did outrun my 510 with an L20B and dual carbs. He did manage to put it on its top on a pefectly parking lot.
Even though I am a Ford guy at heart, the only reason to own a Pinto is if it's inflicted on you, like a Chrismas shirt given to you by your aunt that you have to wear next year regardless how hideous it is.

My father-in-law bought a new Pinto in the 70's. It was yellow. After 2 years in the Midwestern winters, it was rusted to the point it was almost un-drivable. It looked like a rotten banana.

No way! This photo is around 1977, and we listened to Zepplin, Fog Hat, etc...

Isn't there a problem (significant) with the exploding gas tank?

Not a big deal. A lot of people got f**ked when they bought that car.
