Question [Fixed] Rusted rear hatch bolts

I've gone through this car very thoroughly (because 2015 used with 43k miles). I'm not finding any leaks, rust, damages, etc... EXCEPT two places: the bolts that hold the rear hatch lifts supports to the body. Is this common? Why and how would rust get there? TIA

Hmm, never seen that before. Did the vehicle reside in a seaside coastal area by chance?

1 previous owner out of NH. This one came off lease. I would agree, but shouldn't the rest of the exposed rust-prone nuts/bolts/screws be rusted as well? Those look like very specific fasteners so I can't just run down to Ace. TY

I just looked at mine ( 2017 S ) and the bolts as well at the clip that hold the top of the strut are anodized or painted black - no signs of corrosion.

the bolts on your Macan don’t look terrible but the clip is totally unacceptable.

If you purchased the car CPO I’d reach out to the dealer to see if they can get you those clips.

Yup, CPO, so I'm not too worried. I've been looking for that clip, but I think it's part of the lift support. I agree, bolts aren't terrible, but I'll replace them with SS regardless. Glad to know this is isolated.

Maybe you know this, but the clip holds the ball of the strut mount in the socket. I'm fairly certain they can't be purchased separately so perhaps you'll end up with new struts. I agree that one would think there are other more vulnerable places on the car that would show signs of corrosion. Have you had a chance to see the car on a lift?

You can probably get those strut clips from any auto parts store where the gas struts are displayed or the HELP products are located.

I'm a little OSD too. That would bug me too.
I just change the struts on another car. I tossed that clip from the old shocks.
I would change that out. Too fuzzy and rusty to refinish.
The torx bolts? I would take out one at a time, clean and clear coat, and reinstall.
Or if your buddies with your dealer? Get them to trade out the part, from a car going to auction.
Ten minutes of work. Offer to pay.

Might have found the culprit. Water (obviously) running from top of hatch and over the strut. I just went through a touchless car wash and found it soaked.

No sure if this came out correctly, bit the strut is soaked.

I believe it’s normal to have some water in that area during heavy rains / car washes. Every time i wash my car there’s water in the area you pictured ( others have reported this as well ). Again, I’ve never seen anyone mention corrosion like the type you’re having.

look at this thread - specifically posts # 19 and #20 - hope it helps.

Shows you how little I know about hood/hatch struts. Apparently this is a common item (not problem). Went to dealer-->2min-->fixed and driving away. They're just clips. Dealer acknowledges water runs down that area and back out. It went unnoticed since it has not been reported as a problem. Fixed.

So after looking at all these pictures I went down and opened up my hatch. There was a little water on the hatch seal and I observed that when the water drains down the opened hatch it goes directly onto that round seal/spacer that anchors one end of the strut. German engineering at its absolute finest.

Is there a part number for this clip?

The clips on my 2015 Macan Turbo were also rusted. I recently replaced them myself.
