What brake pads are you using? (You may want to start another thread for this... this is a known issue)

Back to the original issue re the transmission, my 3rd gear failure was a 981 GTS, not a GT4, so if the two transmissions are different it seems to be affecting both, unless there is a common part.

Oem and pagids will do that because of tapering. Stick with ferodo ds1.11, pfc11, or endless me20 and that won't happen anymore

Do all 981 boxes have the same welded 3rd gear or just the GT4?? This is key..

I used to own a welding supply business in another life. A weld with full penetration is stronger than the base metal.Could be nothing more than a batch of bad welds. Machine settings and amperage settings that changed which would affect penetration and strength. carl

As a retired pipeline engineer, weld quality was also the first thing I thought of. Interesting that all of the reports that mention delivery dates seem to have been 2016 dates. Has anyone with a 2015 calendar year production date suffered this type of failure yet?

I don't know anyone who has been inside one. Until I saw Sharkie's take out gears we had no reason the believe they had changed the design/manufacturing technique. My guess would be that all 3rd&4th gears are now done this way.

I don't see how it could be a bad "batch" of welds. These are computer generated welds and I don't think the machine would ever have its program altered. .I have a different theory. I think the reason it is happening on 3rd is because the synchro teeth overhang the gear. I think the synchro teeth is flexing and cracking the welds.

Back to the question about the 981 base box? No idea if they will start breaking. It is a different ratio. It will overhang less.

Lastly my gears are splined. All 4 ratios 3-6 are splined. We wanted the teeth to be replaceable.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but aren't we back to the orginal question..What is different if anything about the GT4 gear box?
If I'm understanding what you are saying is that all third gears are welded on all 981 gear boxes. Correct? Thanks carl

I repeat, I don't know if they are all welded now because I haven't been in one, but its a safe guess.
