Ok I'll ask him to ask to check for the new part/serial number as I assume a replacement box isn't going to be an issue under warranty...
Hi there, yes, not the first post I was looking to be making.

OPC confirmed today 3rd lost and awaiting the mothership to approve new GB install, car just under 4k miles and had been tracked previous to me collecting on Saturday but not much from indications.

I asked the service manager to confirm new GB would not have same issue he stated it was a new and improved item, we shall see.

Default Boxed box

In my case
Built date 04/16
total miles: 4400
track miles : 1200ish?
Mods: few suspension bits, alignment, RE71Rs

Powering out of a 2nd gear corner at Pacific Raceways and no power when I shifted up to 3rd. No warning, no overrev etc as others have said. Oddly a few people had come up to me earlier in the day saying "hey have you lost 3rd gear yet? haha" so it was on my mind and I knew right away what happened as I limped back to the paddock.

That was in early September. Just got my car back today; took a bit over SIX WEEKS to replace the box. Apparently only the 2nd car they've seen with this issue at Porsche Bellevue.

In my case replacement was a CX part # which from what I gather from above is a factory rebuild. FWIW my service advisor Matt Moody did his very best to make the crappy situation better with timely updates, being up front about the issues and suggesting solutions.

Added vdar and nudenut to the database.

As far as the CX part # - I don't believe we've seen any failures for anyone once they started giving out the CX part#.

Also, I heard someone say they think the problematic part had 3 small spot welds for 3rd gear verse the CX part should have a "full" weld to the spline? I'm not that savy mechanically, so someone may want to reconcile that..

Again, no failures that I am aware of for anyone with CX part.

I can also say that we haven't seen any 3rd gear failures with the new part numbers. We know that the early transmission replacements were the same and therefore had the same potential issue, which would explain why some people have had a second 3rd gear failure. From what we understand, the revised weld is similar/same to that done before they switched to the weaker weld (believed to be December 2015). We haven't seen nor heard of any 981 Boxster/Cayman S or GTS models pre-2016 (same 3rd gear) with any failures. Between that and seeing no failures on the revised part numbers, it is confidence inspiring that the issue has been resolved. Worst case scenario, Holinger has already released a factory ratio reinforced/splined 3rd gear that can be installed, and Matt's is coming soon. For any transmission work I always recommend Brian at BMC&G if you are located in the states. And hey, while you're in there you might as well throw in our shorter final drive

So how long is the warranty from Porsche for these cars? If one has not yet experienced this issue and they do experience it POST warranty period they are pretty much SOL aren't they? I mean this is a legit problem would Porsche still do the right thing and cover the replacement? I got a Spyder btw. About 2 track days on it at Road Atlanta and AMP. 7700 miles on the clock. Picked up March 2016.

I believe the OEM warranty on these GT4's is 3 year or X miles.. don't remember the miles but I remember it felt sort of low.

In the US, Porsche's standard warranty, including for GT cars, is four years/50k miles, whichever happens first. No info on ROW warranties.

Porsche has granted some GT4 owners with third-gear transmission failures with an additional warranty, which matches CPO, six years/100k miles.

in Italy is 2 years.... if you want additional years (max other 2 years) you have to pay 900 euro x year...

4 years / 80000km in Canada, CPO adds 2 years and another 80000km.

I suspect Porsche doesn't want the dealers to talk about the number of cases they are seeing; Porsche Bellevue has certainly seen more than 2 GT4s with a broken 3rd gear. When I dropped my car off on Sept. 11 at first my service adviser was playing dumb, but then he admitted that they had seen more than a handful. I know personally one owner who brought his GT4 in to Porsche Bellevue for this issue in early June.

FWIW, it took about 3.5 weeks to get my transaxle replaced.

I despise that sort of dishonesty. If a dealership played that game with me they would lose all future service and sales from me on principal. Don't obfuscate the truth.

Problem with 718S Boxster

"My 'only' problem has been the loss of 3rd gear requiring a new transmission at 10k"

to add to what Ralph found I saw this on another site. 2 separate cases of 3rd gear failure on 718’s.
