This thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/gt4/9616...ailures-2.html, combined with the thread this post is in are the only two threads on RL I'm aware of that are discussing/tracking the 3rd gear failures.
The only other thread on the topic is the one offering to set up a tracking database of the failures, and it currently has only one entry.

Mech33: Sorry to hear of your gearbox's failure.
For those willing to provide it, standardized info would be helpful on these failures, such as:
-Vehicle build date:
-Odometer reading at failure:
-Track mileage to date: (estimate ok)
-Failed on track or street:
-Symtoms/noises/etc:
-Dealer response:
-Estimated time of new gearbox delivery:

If anybody is keeping track - my tranny also grinded a few times downshifting into 3rd on track. I don't shift very fast and has been using the sport button too....
2016 March delivery - 2700 miles. About 5 hours of track day time so far. Bone stock car.

I've seen 2 3rd gear failures at the track. Both cars were running Hoosiers. I'm wondering if the stickier tires put more stress on the tranny to the point that they'd fail.
My car just crossed the 15k mile mark with 26 track days (only ran the car with hoosiers for 3 track days) and no issues at all. Mine was an early 918 owner build (July 2015).

the cars i spoke of, i PERSONALLY know the car and the driver and know how they were driven. i do not think tires has anyting to do with it. one fail with only 4 day (< 400 miles) on R7 and they were going slower than the car on RE71 so they are not pulling more G's.

I called the dealer last Friday, they just had received the box.
I will pick up the car by the end of the week. The chief mechanic was not aware of tranny modification.
He told me that all replacement gearboxes had specific ID numbers and that he's gonna try to find out if updates are made on it, as he's pissed at what happened to the car and by extension to me
I'll keep you posted.

My car has now been sitting at the dealer for a week, and there still isn't even an ETA on when a tranny will become available.
