I have no idea why hot hatches haven't caught on here. They are awesome.

Ok this thread caused me to go test drive a GTI this afternoon. Great little car! I'm tempted by the R but the GTI with the performance pack is probably what I'll end up wth.
What are the thoughts on the DCC package?

MX-5 RF - best of both worlds. Absolutely gorgeous to boot.

Well thanks for all of the feedback here. I am quite surprised by how many GT4 owners daily drive a Golf R or GTI.
I went ahead and picked up the R on Saturday. It is Lapiz Blue with DCC and manual transmission. So far I am really liking it!
Now I will have to get an APR Stage 1 tune done....

You are considering exactly what I have done - passed on the R and went with Autobahn and PP. The DCC is nice but not needed. It only applies to the two rear wheels. Save the $1,000. I ultimately went with the Autobahn because I received $5k off sticker and that made it a $10k swing to the R, plus I drive 40k miles per year.

This thread caused me to dump my M235 X drive for a GTI SE with Performance Pack and 6MT on Saturday. Wanted the R, but VW is give huge discounts on the GTI's that made it an easy decision for my situation.

I think you purchased the most bang for your buck possible - great car!

Can you definite "huge"? ;-) Was there one model more than another that they were willing to negotiate on?

They gave me $4k off MSRP and ate a few grand negative equity on the 235 (just got it 4 months ago and was not a fan). This applied to any GTI, not sure about others except R which was no discount. Compared to BMW, the process was amazingly simple and I couldn't believe all the features that come standard.

VA dealers are knocking $5-6.5k off any of them minus the R. I think you have to apply for VW financing to qualify for all the discounts (1.9% up to 60mo, 2.9% more). They seem to be more flexible on price with the manual transmission cars.

The GTI is the best deal with those discounts no doubt!
I just wanted the R despite that...
I am just pig headed when I have my heart on something...

Both seem good, but i'm sure the R is on another level. Availability is poor in my area according to a few dealers I spoke with.

nothing wrong with that - I settled on the really good GTI versus the R mainly because of my annual 40k miles - didn't want to do that to the R

Nothing wrong with that. You want what you want. For example I know I should keep my e92m, but I really want an m4 despite the fact it's one of the worst in its class. Sometimes you want to do stupid things because you want to do stupid things.
