A lot more obtainable relative to the GT4, meaning you will be assured of getting one (it will have a 4 yr production), just might take a while in this early stage given it was just released. I checked with my SA, and he had 17ppl on the list (BMW Manhattan, which is a factory store). Granted, long list but essentially anyone that wants one will eventually get one (which wasn't the case with the GT4 given its relatively short production cycle).

OP, have you considered the S3, assuming you don't need the hatchback versatility. Or even better, the RS3 which is confirmed to come to our shores (in sedan form only). Will likely be a yr from now, but may be worth waiting.

I was told that the M2 was gonna have a limited production run of 10,000 with 2000 coming to US. Also read it somewhere online. Did this change recently?

Not sure where the source of this info is from, WW, but conflicts with everything I've personally read and heard from various BMW folk. My understanding is the car will not be limited (strictly speaking in terms of actual pre-set production numbers), but basically be a function of available production capacity at the (Leipzig) plant. Numbers I have heard gravitate to around 2-4K per year for the US, over a 4 year period (as the 2-series is yet to receive a facelift, so you've got quite a ways to go before an all-new 2-series). BMW intended this to be a mass production car, not a limited ///M car (a la the GTS, and in prior generations CSLs), so you will definitely be seeing those around. As usual, it is in this early rush that demand outstrips supply, and of course rumors running wild (including a potential M2 CSL, which at this stage is pure speculation).

if you want an M2 , you can get one , certaily much easier than a GT4.I don't think the M2 will be a limited production, I am looking to do european delivery on M2 , but have not contacted a dealer yet till I have a chance to drive one.Despite all the good reviews, I like to judge for myself,

Wow, lots of replies...more than I expected! Especially that so many of you have an R or GTI.
Appreciate the feedback.

Audi S3 and BMW are nice but not what I want right now. I want a low key car.
MX5 Miata is fun but not what I am looking for.

I am leaning toward the Golf R. But the GTI is appealing for the price.

I bought my GT4 for daily driving but could not do that after 2200 miles. so was looking for alternative and ended up with Golf R. great DD car. Only paid $500 above Dealer invoice.
Where are you located?
All the dealers anywhere close are only selling at MSRP.
But I am told there is not much markup on these.
I do hav a pending deal that is 1400 off MSRP.
If the mark up is really only 900 then that is a good deal I guess.

The previous gen did have an available hard top convertible. That could be an option?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how EVO preferred the R over the RS3.

discount of 1400 dollars is great
i did get 900 dollars off after dealing with 3 dealers that was 3 months ago. the MSRP to invoice on base is around 1600 dollars but I do believe they have hold back and other incentives. Irrespective the vw dealers are going through hard time with declining sales, and the R is the only hot car they have and they are sticking to their guns and in all honesty I don't blame them

I test drove a golf r, they are a lot of fun. Good power for that type of car and the turbo lag just added to the pomp and circumstance. I'm not much into luxury cars for the luxury, so it doesn't take much to impress me in that department. Compared to my fantastic subaru, it felt very nice for a DD. Such competence without being "showy" is a great thing.

(Someday I'll have to yank my wrx seats and carve the foam into a different shape for better comfort. Hard to swap seats without losing the side airbags, so I almost bought an R just for the seats!)

My A45 AMG is my daily, nice little AWD MB hatch with decent HP (around 360). Sadly, for some reason, you yanks don't like hatches so MB only sell you guys the CLA45 AMG, the sedan version of the A45 lol.

The A45 is probably not good enough for driving down some of the crappy roads I drive to various shooting ranges so I'm looking at a Macan Turbo to replace it in the future

The M2 is great, buuuut not as practical as a hatchback or small SUV imo. Depends what you're after I 'spose.
