Default 981 GT4 rear shock absorber problem?

I have a 981 GT4 with approximately 17k miles on the clock. I’ve noticed over the past six months that I get a clunking sound coming from the drivers rear when going over bumps or uneven road at lower speeds. It almost sounds like the rear spring is loose and clattering around, but I’ve checked that and they are tight. I also replaced the sway bar bushings to see if that helped. There is no visible leaking from the shock but that’s the only thing I think it could be. Wanted to see if anyone else has a similar issue before I buy a new $900 shock.

I bought my 981 GT4 used, in 2022, at about 21,000 miles. All 4 dampers were leaking, and I replaced all 4 (with Bilstein Clubsports).

supposedly not uncommon for them to leak. Bilstein is probably the way to go for replacement but id also imagine KW are less expensive than even OEM for all 4 corners

Super common problem. I replaced all my struts due to leaky pasm connectors. Clunking is definitely one of the symptoms and if it gets bad enough you will see changes in handling behavior. If your strut looks like this, it’s leaked it’s fluid out

another source of clunking is the sway bar drop links.

Had my car checked out for chronic suspension fault. The guy heard the clunk, and found a couple of places where the nuts had worked loose in the right rear strut mount, which gets a big workout from the curbing at T3 at Rd Atl. Curious to see what happens with the fault.

Update - thank you for the picture. I had noticed this side was dirty but hadn’t thought that it was the fluid that leaked out. Makes perfect sense now. Shock ordered… unfortunately it’s 6-8 weeks out.
