OEM Wheel Defect
The other day I was at my local track and I had my tires changed by a Reputable Tire Shop that sponsor our events. They change tires all day long.
Well I had one of my GT4 OEM Wheel "implode" when they put the pressure in to "pop" the tire into place.
Naturally Porsche does not want to cover the wheel as they say the tire shop put too much air in.
How can you put enough air to "implode" the wheel when the tire stays intact ?
I say it is a wheel defect. What are your thought ? Tire Shop says it is the second time they see this on a OEM GT4 Wheel.
There are three dents, or are there more?
Evenly spaced?
How much pressure was applied?
Was the tire deflated before it was changed?
Asking because of the crack.
This denting result has happened before, but it was thought to have been caused by running over berm serrations.

Yes evenly spaced all around the wheel.
I do not know the pressure, I was further away in the paddocks. I guess enough to seat the tire.
Yes the previous tire was deflated.
Tire Shop guys are now worried when they do GT4 tires and they put them under a gate when they inflate them as it is the second time they have seen this.

Could it be that the rim made contact with a serrated berm through the tire, causing the damage, so that when the tire was replaced it had become deflated because of the crack?
Positive this has happened before... Same situation, gator marks on barrel... Go out with more air next time, and stay away from berms until up to temp/pressure.
My Solution, at least for the track...get a good set of forged Wheels in 19"....stronger, less weight and a bit more sidewall so you feel a lot better going over those berms....Ohh and get back those 0.5" on the front the GT3 guys get and we don't.
