I think that the 718 GT4 CS is much more tolerant of different rubber than the early 981 GT4 CS, so the DH and F200 are good alternates, especially from a value perspective.
I used to do a fair bit of tire testing, and all the companies ebb and flow over the years.
If I were running a 718 GT4 CS (or an RS CS, when they come), I’d run Michelins to start with or if I was not going to do enough serious testing to optimize another make or model of tire.
But that’s just me. I really think the package, as it comes from Porsche, is optimized. Just like the 992 GT3 Cup…

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but I wonder if Peter or anyone else can elaborate on this...
What about the 718 CS platform makes it more tolerant of different rubber compared to the 981 CS? Can the 981 be upgraded (shocks? springs?) to match the tolerance of the 718?
I'm looking at some 981 CS now, didn't see much reason to pay more for the 718 CS. Track days only. Pretty decent driver.
Thx.

The 981 CS with the 2 way KWs is essentially the same suspension as the 718 CS. The cars will turn times only 1-2 different at a big track like Sebring. Maybe the non adjustable shocks were different, but the adjustable KWs can be tuned just fine for many different tires: I’ve used Pirelli DH slicks, MPSCs, Hankooks and a few others all on the 981 platform, all with decent success.

Another aspect would be the rear sway bar on the 718 is essentially the 991 Cup rear sway bar (bladed multi-position) where as the 981 is not a bladed sway bar (3-position). Overall, the 718 has subtle updates across all area (engine, suspension, body, etc). over the 981 which entirely explains the cost difference on the cars if you were to start updating a 981 to align to a 718 it would make more sense to buy a 718 from the get go.

There’s no doubt that the 718 is a better and faster car, but both cars can run different tires equally well.
