Default Are electric impact Drivers any good?

My birthday's coming up and I'm thinking about asking my wife for an electric impact driver.

Something like this one:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...s&sName=Drills

Does anyone have experience with these? I know an electric couldn't take the place of an air impact wrench, but would it do a decent job of loosening stuck bolts and tough lug nuts?

Thanks!

Jeff

Your link didn't work, but I have a craftsman 18v impact wrench, and it works really well. No trouble with tough lug bolts.

I've been using a 18V Milwaukee impact wrench for several years of spec Miata racing and it works great for lug bolts- I just take an extra battery along for the weekend. Makes changing wheels a LOT easier.

Whatever you wind up buying, make sure it is at least 18 volts. I have also used Craftsman tools for years with no problems. Just a suggestion.

When you say electric do you mean cordless? I have an electric dewalt one thats the "plug into wall" type that works better than most of my other air impacts. I got it from home depot for about $180, about 2 years ago.

I'm considering both. It looks like a decent (18V+) cordless is around $250-$300 and there are a few good corded ones for a little over half that price.

A cordless one is tempting for the convenience, but I don't want to spend big bucks and then have something without enough power.

So I guess I'm leaning towards a corded one like your dewalt or a corded craftsman pro ...

Do yourself a favor and get one with a cord. The battery pack on the cordless stick out quite a bbit and if you have to get into a tight spot like dropping out suspension parts for example, the cordless may not fit. So space is a consideration.

I LOVE my electric impact. I have had it for almost 8years and I love that thing! Mine is made my Black and Decker.

I bought an 18v cordless DeWalt XRP from eBay last year and love it. Priceless and often borrowed by others at the track.

Second vote for the goodyear cordless. Ive had mine for 2 years, and until my idiot friend lowered my car off the jack without taking it out from underneath it worked great. For the money its hard to beat!! Since I bought mine all my friends ran out and got one once they realized how much easier it is. Now im looking for a small compressor to run air tools, but my friend will be buying me a new cordless for the track.

You don't want the Craftsman. That is a carpenter's tool. You need one with the 1/2 inch square drive.

I have noticed that Sears sell very outdated power tools...so do the research before buying....as far as cordless tools i use Makita lithium-ion tools because battery last nearly twice as long and tools are lighter than dewalt by quite a bit...... ofcourse makita costs more, but since i use them very day quality, comfort and weight matters to me alot.

I've got a DeWalt 18V cordless Impact Gun and love it. Wish I had gotten one earlier. I use it all the time. One trick I found with tough lug nuts that don't want to budge is that you have to make sure the the gun is perfectly aligned with the center of the lug. If it is off by a little bit, it requires more torque and can be tough to get off. Try wiggling the gun around until you find the sweet spot.
