Unhappy I want a Porsche...wife says no.

Any of you have suggestions for how I might sway my other half on this issue. I'm in no rush, but this could be a multi-year project so I need to start asap. I don't think she will ever understand my love of these machines, but I would at least want her to be ok with a Porsche in the garage.

Most will never "understand" just start buying them and thank her alot for "letting" you. Take her out to to dinner and valet park, mine thinks she is a movie star now.

I bought mine a "ROCK" and then told her we need the Cab to compliment the ring. Nuff said...

Do you have small kids? This was one of the things that sold my wife was that the whole family could actually fit in it.

Back when I was a newlywed, I discovered that I could afford the dreamcar of my teenage years: no, not Lambo Countach, the other dream car! My rationalized argument for my wife was:

1) We CAN afford a car that I really really like.
2) By getting a fast dream car now, we are certain to avoid weird midlife crisis decisions down the road.

1 + 2 = Yes!

10 years later... we are still married and have not had a "can I please buy it" conversation since.

Please don't tell my wife I now have my eye on a titanium or Ferrari red ....

OOps. I forgot. There was a #3. Safety record. The vehicle I pursued was pretty durable and much more maneuverable than a Caddie.

1 + 2 + 3 = Yes.

For all I know, I had her at Hello and didn't even need the excuses???

Good luck!

Luckily my wife is pretty understanding and has put up with the habit for 25 years now! In fact, right after we were married we took a rather loud 914-6 to the Asheville Porsche Parade from Iowa. Only time she complained was when I got lost on the rally and was going too quickly on the mountain roads and she got carsick when I tried to get back on course...
Let her drive it now and then- actually my wife loves the Cayenne, though it's not the typical Porsche by any means.
Good luck...

Once my wife first broke into the American Quarter Horse world big time, she urged me to buy my first Porsche (apparently so she wouldn't feel so guilty about what she was spending). Twenty years, 8 horses, and 4 Porsches later, I've ordered my Cayman S and her puny one horse power is still worth more than my 295 hp. Maybe your wife prefers diamonds, furs, or cruises, but it's only fair for her to have someting she wants badly to.

First step is to find out what are her objections and concerns. Why does she say no?

Ha...lot's of responses as I suspected. I already tried telling her it was for her...she saw right through it. The truth is I don't need a car (already have one). I just want a 911. I would give up my toyota truck, and my 2 italian motorcycles. My thinking is that with a sports car, we could enjoy it together while the motorcycles are a solitary activity. I'm not sure why she's so against it. The fact that a 20 yr old Porsche is an affordable exotic doesn't seem to make a difference to her. My wife is very practical (she drives a Daewoo, the thing was 10k brand new), and she just thinks such a car is completely unnecessary. To make matters worse, she is an attorney and very bright, so its difficult to argue with her.

Of course it is completely unnecessary. The point is, it will make you happy. Assuming you are not taking bread off the table (money out of junior's collage fund, etc) there's no legit objection. A nice late 80s 911 is most affordable and reliable if you do your homework. If you're riding bikes it can't be safety. Possibly as an attorney she has seen just a few too many 'Posers in Porsches' and doesn't want to think of you that way? Sounds like its time to negotiate. Tell her how much longer you will live off the bikes. (oops maybe that's why she objects)

You're right about the sharing. My wife gets annoyed when I corner at anything over 'ordinary' speeds - (Fortunately she has no clue as to how I drive it when she's not in it!) but she loves cruising around with the top down.

Take her for a scary ride on the bike. She'll appreciate that the 911 is much safer.

This is the key as I see it!!! She is an attorney. Attorney=$, $=Porsche, Porsche= "I really do love you".

Take her for a test drive at the dealership, just for fun! Don't buy anything that day! Then after some dicussion assure her you will be able to find a nicer, less expensive car through some other means. Also, give up something in return. Remind her of the single life the two of you will have on this earth. Go for the gusto!
