Current draw for MXL2 with Smartycam HD
Is there a way to calculate the current drawn or determine (without a multimeter) the current drawn by the dash and camera?
Aim specs the MXL2 draw at 1400mA ... but what happens to that number when the smartycam hd is connected via expansion hub for power?
Not trying to troubleshoot, just trying to map my power uses and needs.

The AiM website says the dash draws 400 mA and the SCHD Rev2 700 mA. I'm not sure, but I know it's always less than 3 amps because I have it on a 3 amp breaker and it's never blown.

From the dash.
3amps sounds good - I can work with that.
This is for a new build - I would like to see if I couldn't make a pdm15 work

I'll only add that when running multiple cameras, particularly the limited capacity battery equipped GP models, I have found it necessary to add a diode equipped supplementary power cable to one of the open ports on the Data Hub to maintain the batteries in multiple cameras.
The issue is not the dash draw, it's the charging draw for the batteries, particularly when low after longer layoffs between events. The current capacity through ONLY the AiM CAN is limited, and the supplemental switched power supply of either the additional diode equipped power lead OR a two port powered Data Hub may be required.

I agree with Peter that is why I asked whether you had external power to the DH. I like using the external power Data Hub when power draw (or charging the GP battery) is an issue

Fair to say that the dash with sensors & channel expansion plus a single smarty cam would be sufficient on a 3a circuit and definitely fit within an 8a?

Absolutely!

I forget exactly...but I thought you couldn't have a channel expansion and the smarty can hooked up to the dash? I have that but forget how I hooked it up. I have the dash, smarty, DH and 2 channel expansion. The DH is full.

The dash only has a single expansion plug.

What they said I needed the expansion/data hub because the dash wouldn't support both the SmartyCam and a GPS. For some reason that I can't remember top of my head, I couldn't daisychain the GPS to the SCHD to the MXL2.
edit: just remembered - LCU-one lambda controller.
This but with a SCHD and only one controller...

The GPS-05 and GPS-08 antennas that come with the dashes are five-pin AiM CAN enabled. They plug into Data Hubs that allow daisy chaining of additional AiM CAN accessories, like LCU-Ones, Channel Expansions, Thermocouple Expansions and SmartyCams.
The GPS-05B and GPS-08B antennas that go to the SmartyCams (of all years) are four-pin SmartyCam only.
