I'm hoping you are right about a math channel for the gear. I'm certain it can be done in RS3 (by someone smarter than me as well); I'm hoping there is a way for the Solo to calculate it to feed to the SmartyCam video. That will be my next research, after I figure out why the SmartyCam didn't record at all during yesterday's test run (after working properly the day before).

Under the SmartyCam Stream tab in your Solo 2 DL config (I am assuming. It’s a Solo 2 DL), make sure all the channels line up, specifically Brake Pressure 4 to camera Brake Pressure, with not set in brake position so it doesn’t get confused. Then, if you had to make any changes, Transmit those changes to the logger. Confirm that GPS Speed is the camera speed channel.

On the camera, make sure under Menu>Settings> Auto Start Rec is set to 20 or 30 mph. Then Auto Stop to 1 minute. All this can be done with the push buttons on the camera.

I have several 718 GT4’s showing gear, but I think it’s a PDK only or a manual only sent channel, one or the other.

I would set up a math channel in the logger for Pre Calculated gear. Enter the tire circumference, final drive and all intermediate gears, use GPS speed and RPM (the one that works), 0.3 for the shift time and transmit. Should work.

Gear math channel. I like to use the calculated gear as it functions well and you don't have to enter all the info.

For recording parameters, I suggest using logger command. It can improve the video link to data file process versus just using the speed thresholds.

I used "PreCalcGear" and set it up with tire circumference and gear ratios; just back from a test and it is working great. Other data is present in RS3 and on my video (after I mapped the appropriate fields in the SmartyCam feed).

I did have the camera set up for logger command but it didn't activate during my tests yesterday; changed it to 20mph and worked today. It had always worked before with logger command so I'm confused about what's going on there.

If I have time, I will change the camera back and see if it works but I like the idea of the camera not starting every time I move the car in the garage or paddock.

Lots of work to get to this point but hopefully I don't have to mess with configurations (and wiring) for a long time!

Speed is better than logger command, for sure.

Glad your Pre-calc gear is working.

As one of the first users of RS3A, using it in depth, and using it every day, I can say that using logger command is a much better SOP. By using logger command, you make sure that the video files are 1:1 with the data files. That helps to ensure good matching of videos for analysis and eliminates having to do any manual un-linking and re-linking.

Sorry for the hijack......

What should the Comm frequency speed be set to? Can I go faster then the default 10hz?

Can dependent?

My Brake and gas pedals seems slow in the videos.

ECU Stream is set to OBD_II - CANbus but no live reading of RMP. I am using RaceStudio3 (64bit) 3.35.01 to transfer/update the setting to the AiM Solo 2 DL unit.

Here are screen shots of my settings:

It's set by the car, not the device. Are you using an advanced or standard SmartyCam stream?

981 GT4 CS hard wired to the CAN. Is this Advanced?

Also, I just noticed there is a new 981 CS CAN protocol v. 02.00.03 .... Should I be using it?

It’s confusing.

If the 981 GT4 ClubSport does NOT have a Manthey Racing gateway (MR breakout box or grey Deutsch connector in the forward side of the passenger side footwell), you need to use the 991_911 ECU Stream and connect to the orange/red-orange/brown twisted pair. Brake pressure on BP4.

If it DOES have the Manthey Racing gateway and you are connected to the proper connector on the passenger footwell forward of the door or the breakout box, you may use the 981 CS ECU Stream.

Nothing comes through the OBDII that is worthwhile.

Unless you have a SmartyCam 3 (which it doesn’t sound like), you are good to go if you’re getting information from the car on the video. You can use 20 Hz for Accelerator Pedal, Brake Pressure 4 and wheel speeds, as well as steering. But that’s not why the imaging is slow. 6 Hz on the old V2.1 cameras.

Hello Peter,
I recently sold a 2020 manual GT4 and purchased a 2021 PDK GT4 and attempted to setup my working Can bus connection as before-using Orange/brown, Orange/red wires as I did on the 2020. I see here in this thread a reference to O/Brown, O/Purple as the correct pairs for Can bus access to 718 GT4s now. Did something change between 2020 and 2021 GT4s? I only get MPH now on the 2021 car where before I got RPM, MPH, Brake, throttle, steering angle.

It's been spotty on the 718 GT4 street cars.

Surprised you got anything on the red/brown stripe pair. I use the purple/brown pair for VBOX and the black/brown pair for AiM Solo 2 DL. There are similar messages on both buses, but nothing from the 718 GT4 (2020-on) from the red/brown pair, IIRC.

Try the white AiM to the orange/black stripe and blue AiM to the orange/brown stripe pair. ECU Stream is 991_911 (NOT OBDII)

Thank you Peter, will give the Or/Blk and Or/Br pair and report back.
