The M-power adapter cable is fine, just an identical, non-proprietary, expensive plug in harness that is available from others for less. I don’t sell hardware anymore but glad to tell you how to make up and install your own.

There is no good info coming over OBDII, so the direct CAN connection is the best way.

Peter
Thanks for the info: very helpful. I've looked at your install guide here http://www.peterkrause.net/Krause_%2...ll%20Guide.pdf

Is that the best way or are you referring to another approach?

Thanks!

So this is for the 981 GT4 not the 718 GT4. You want to use a different twisted pair as the information is not on the 718 bus with the same color as the 981 GT4.

Also, I use reversible, tool-less Posi-taps to make the wiring connection to the CANbus, no more solder.

I recently installed my AIM Solo2 DL in my 22 718 GT4; my mechanic wired into the CAN bus per Peter's instructions; I didn't have the right ECU protocol installed for my first event at Lime Rock. So I installed 991-911 ECU protocol and tested it on a 30 minute road trip yesterday, with less than stellar results. These items seem to work (I think)
  • all of the TRQ's
  • Steer Pos
  • Steer Spd
  • MAP
  • ECT
  • Oil Temp
  • IAT
No data for
  • RPM
  • Gear
  • Brk Press1 through 4
  • Gear Temp
  • Mode Sel
  • Susp SW
  • Brk SW (except maybe the parking brake?)
Data that doesn't seem right for
  • Acc Lat (all positive for first 15 minutes; then all negative for 10 minutes)
  • Brk Press (30 bar at beginning; then 0 for 20 minutes, then over 25 bar, declining to 10 bar over a 5 minute period)
  • Eng Pwr (constant 309)
  • Fuel Lev (constant 26)
I am apparently missing something: I'm hoping someone can help!

TIA

Bill, sounds screwy to me. If he connected to the orange/red-orange/brown pair, then that could explain some of this. That is not the correct pair for the 718 GT4.

You'll find that some of these channels don't work. Just because they are listed doesn't guarantee that they'll work, AiM even says so.

911_991 is the correct protocol. No termination resistor, no silent on CANbus.

I'm only looking for driver stuff, so RPM, brake pressure, throttle pedal position and steering.

Peter

I appreciate the quick reply. Like you, I'm only looking for the driver stuff; the items you mentioned plus gear. I just checked the config and it doesn't have Silent or Resistor checked so it sounds like tomorrow I need to see which wires are tapped.

I know that the guy who installed the wiring had your instructions but who knows...

Many thanks,

Bill

This is what the current connections look like; hard to tell if white is connected to orange/purple or orange/black.

Welp! That’s why you’re not getting what you want.

The orange/purple (AiM white) and orange/brown (AiM blue) pair is visible at the very top of your pic.

The orange/red pair for the 981 cars is visible just below that.

Here is what I hope is the correct pair of wires to tap (far left: orange/brown and orange/purple). Still missing Brake Pressure and Gear, however

I don’t think you’ll get gear. One of the cars (manual or PDK) get it, one of them doesn’t.

You should be getting a negative (-) value in the Brake Pressure that never changes but look carefully at BP4, as that is the channel I’ve got information coming over from a dozen 2020-on 718 GT4’s.

Peter

As usual: correct. BP 4 does have values! Brake Pressure is a constant -1.

Too bad about gear; I would really like to have it since there are several places where it would be useful to compare two options. Plus its a very nice to have in the video.

I guess nothing is perfect...

Thanks for all the help. At least, it appears I'm now wired in correctly and just have to get used to which fields have data (and do some mapping).

Bill

PS. Now to figure out why the SmartyCam isn't recording.

For the record (and for the next person hooking up an AIM system to a 718 GT4 CAN bus). Here is the data I'm getting, now that I'm wired correctly
  • Steer Pos
  • Steer Spd
  • Acc Lat
  • Wheel FL, FR, RL, RR
  • RPM dup 2 (not RPM dup; no plain RPM; this may be unique to my setup; not sure)
  • Pedal Pos
  • Brk Sw
  • MAP, ECT, Oil Temp, IAT, Fuel Lev
  • Brk Press 4 (apparently the master brake pressure value
The bad news, as noted above, is that there is no Gear data in either field (Gear info, Gear). I would certainly trade most of the temp measures for Gear! But that is wishful thinking.
