Transfer case

Mainly short commute of normal speed driving. Towing of a Spec Miata about once/month on a Featherlite trailer 400-500 miles round trip each time.

I'm very appreciative of the work deilenberger has done to make Cayenne owners aware of this problem including the symptoms and the remedies. My 2016 CS with 19,500 miles started to exhibit feedback through the steering wheel of chafing or rubbing (grip and release) at low speeds while turning in both reverse and forward directions. Over the the next 500 miles it became worse. I've had a lot of experience rebuilding 60's and 70's muscle cars as well as doing work on my daily use vehicles. At first I though it might be a caliper or warped rotor but quickly determined that not to be the case. Googling for more information led me to this forum and after reading the posts I felt this was the early stage of a transfer case problem. I took the car into the dealer for the 20K mile service yesterday and discussed my concern. The tech verified that it was in fact the transfer case and they were able to replace the transfer case and complete the 20K service in just over 24 hours. No issue or pushback. Is under warranty for another 4 years as CPO in place. I feel that being very informed on this issue resulted in the replacement going so smoothly.
If the dealer had not immediately replaced the unit I would not hesitate to do an oil change myself. Dealer cost for a transfer case oil change was quoted at $550!
I've filled out the survey already. Also posting the part numbers.

I am very appreciative also. My car is new to me and just hit the 60k mark. Still on the original TC. But because of this thread I have changed the fluid twice already and plan to incorporate the TC into my normal oil change routine. Which will be every 5k miles.

I have an isolated vibration only on the move, giving it gas btw 1800 and 2000rpms, occasionally accompanied with the groaning sound mentioned. I also get the groaning sound when i turn sometimes. Could this be a sign of my transfer case going or am I barking up the wrong tree?

The usual description for the transfer case failure is what feels like a slip/connect when it shifts from 2nd-3rd, and sometimes 3rd-4th. I can't recall a groaning noise being reported - but if you suspect the transfer case it's worth changing the oil. There is a DIY in the Cayenne DIY subforum on doing that.

Might be worth taking a look at the rear driveshaft carrier bearing tho.
Interesting, 2011 with very few miles...

I also seem to have my revs rising then falling then rising again in 2nd gear, akin to it changing into 3rd but staying in second, even though I accelerate with constant pressure, could this be the slip and grab you guys are referring to? When I'm braking from high speed I also get a jerk that feels as strong as the whole car jerking forward, not sure if it's in need of a gearbox recalibration of a replacement of the transfer case. Funny getting all these problems with only 22k miles.

Not sure if Libson Truck also furnishes cayenne TCs.
