Question Strange noise on V6 Diesel

Hello everyone,

Preface: I'm completely noob to mechanics.

After driving for about forty minutes on county roads, when I was heading home, I passed through a narrow alley.
With the windows down, I had the opportunity to listen to the purring of my diesel engine. On the passenger side, a sound slightly different from what I usually hear caught my attention.

I'd like to get your opinion on the sound of the warm engine at idle. The radiator fan was turning very slowly, it was probably about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. No loss of power was noticed.

This morning, when a cold start, the sound was the same. It's worth noting that this is a 2012 model with 155,000 miles on it (maintained by Porsche until 124,000 miles). The last service was done 400 miles ago by an independent mechanic.

Could you please help to identify the source of this weird noise, or it's in my brain, i'm weird

Thank you so much per advance

While I can't help you identify the culprit as I am not a mechanic I can assure you that this "clicking sound" heard from the side is not normal at all. I drive the same car, V6 3L Diesel 2011, and I don't have that noise - it is NOT in your brain, there IS something out of the ordinary.

Hi, I'm pretty sure this sound comes from the injectors. Bad seal(s), so I would replace them.

thank you for your advice.

However, I do not notice any leaks on those which are accessible.
when I pass my hand I don't feel any air passing.

when accelerating, no difference in sound.

[EDIT] I think you totally right

Injectors.

If no leaks and no check engine lights, and the vehicle behaves normally, then you are OK.
A Fuel injector leak will leave a black tar drip below the bad injector.

Also, Fuel injectors on diesels CAN be noisy and you are just noticing.

Add PowerService diesel additive to EACH tank.
It adds lubricity to the fuel, helping the High pressure fuel pump and possibly help the injectors.

Maybe they will quiet down a little after a couple tanks.

Otherwise, I'm not to worried.

Sounds like an injector seal leak. I'm doing mine this weekend at 120k, which sounds similar. I put a ratchet on the hold down bolts and they were all rather loose, so not sure if the copper seals compressed over time or the bolts lost torque.

The passenger side bank is the hardest to check because of the airbox and charge pipes. There is a hole in the cylinder head for each injector between the exhaust manifold and the valve cover, which will vent gasses that are leaking past the injector tip seal. You can feel them with your finger and wipe around them with a rag. If there's any amount of soot or gunk around the hole there's a good change it's leaking. The sound you hear is combustion gasses escaping past the injector seal and being vented out the side of the block. There may also be the occasional whiff of raw diesel exhaust smell.

IDparts.com has the seals - there are 3 per injector which you might as well replace all of them.

The hold down bolts are torque to yield so you need 6 of those -
WHT004923B

Tools are listed in the Touareg sevice manual available on the internets. I bought the slide hammer and fuel line socket for about $150 on ebay. If the seals are fine, then the injectors should pop right out, but if they're leaking then they may require the slide hammer which threads onto the injector. Then you'll need some way of cleaning the seats, or if it's really bad you may need to recut a seat.

Hello Gentlemen,

Thank you all for your interest in my problem, which doesn't seem to be a real issue.

Indeed, I went to my mechanic who connected his diagnostic tool.

It turns out that the values of my injectors are roughly balanced.
With an engine load of 3000 revolutions per minute, the value is around 0.75.
Only injector number 6 showed a higher value than the rest: 1.70

Perhaps the pressure is slightly higher than the rest to compensate for a potential loss due to a seal that might be showing signs of weakness...

I will test the additive and will provide feedback as soon as I have the opportunity to take the vehicle on the highway.

A big thank you to everyone.

Hello,

More informations about that weird noise close to the injectors. I think i found the cause.

Watch and listen

Consequences : Smell exhaust gas in the cabin and strange engine behavior between 1000/1500 trs per minute.

No default on the dashboard, no power failure for the moment...

I don't know what is this part that leaking...i move forward my investigation.

Thank you

I think that guy describe my problem at 10.45 min

But maybe it's a leaking from the pressure pipe
