Default 350mm or 360mm Brakes - How to Tell

There's a lot of confusion around the front brakes on the 958 with grey calipers. These cars can come with either 350mm or 360mm brake rotors dependingn on the model year and how Porsche was feeling that day.

It is difficult to physically measure the diameter of the rotor without disassembly. Getting part numbers by VIN is also hit and miss. Going by the guide below will allow you to determine your rotor size without even taking off your wheels, simply by looking at the distinguising features of your rotors.

As someone who has now bought my front brakes twice over, please take note of the following guide before purchasing brakes for your car. Make sure you get matching pads as the backing plates for both 350 and 360mm pads are identical in shape but ever so slightly different. The 350mm pads will fit on 360mm rotors, but will leave around 10mm (3/8") of friction surface unswept - not recommended.

Sounds like someone may have installed S rotors on your Base model, causing your confusion.

The Porsche documents are pretty clear that the base model with the black/grey caliper, has a 350mm front rotor with a 34mm front disc thickness. The S model has a 360mm rotor with a 36mm disc thickness.

Now my OCD is gonna have to check that everything's right on my CD. Pretty sure it is but doesn't hurt to check.

A diesel should only ever come with the base black calipers and base 350mm rotors.

Are the calipers different too, or just a pads/rotors?

This is helpful, as it means those of us with Turbo models + must have the 390/358 front/rear with 38/28mm thickness. God it's hard trying to find a good place to buy brakes for my 2011 that are decently priced and decently better than stock. Don't mean to thread-jack! But at least this is helpful size info for anyone interested.

Interesting as to why Porsche did this.
My 12 Base/grey caliper looks like the 350mm rotor and is 350mm. My 13 Base/grey caliper looks like the 360mm rotor and is 360mm.
I wonder if I can put 360mm rotor/pads onto my 2012 which came with 350mm's stock....

I haven't personally tested it, but I'm 99% sure either 350 or 360 mm brakes will fit on all 958 Cayennes with grey calipers without issue. The key is making sure you get the right pad as that this what determines the geometry of the swept area on the friction surface.

Spot on. My 2020 has the same rotor design with the black/grey calipers and has 350mm.

I believe that the brake calipers are identical in both cases and it would be possible to mount the 360mm rotors to replace the 350mm ones, but in order to do so, it would be necessary to separate the calipers from the rotors by 5mm. putting two spacer washers between the front pivot bearing and the brake caliper..

I can confirm that 350mm rotors and 360mm are interchangeable, at least they were on my 2012 958.1 base. I actually had the 360mm rotors on the front and was able to put 350mm ones on with no fitment issues and no real differences in braking performance. I would’ve used the 360mm but I had new unused 350mm rotors sitting in my garage from a brake job I never got around to doing on my old q7.
