Hello all,

I have scoured the forums and haven’t found anything specifically, so here’s my question: when looking for a CD, are you prioritizing a newer vehicle or lower mileage if one has to give? Put another way, would you prefer, from a reliability perspective, a 2013 with 83K miles or a 2015 w/ 135k mi (an example, looking for generalized answers though), all other things being as equal as they can be?
Another related question: was 958.2 a big update for the CD? Any major fixes to engine or drivetrain that are lauded for improving reliability?

I believe they are all mechanically identical in the US 13-16. If you pay for repairs/service - get as new and low miles as you can. Otherwise, look for options/pricing. I bought mine with 138k miles. Doesn't bother me and I didn't care about the warranty. It would be worth checking if there is warranty left on on any you find (depends on when the "fix" was performed. Most dealers/sellers had no idea that warranty was still in place from dieselgate. I recently purchased a 15' CD with 123k miles on it, it is sitting at 139k now with no issues. I went for options, condition maintenance history and then mileage. I found lower mile cars that were not in as nice shape as the one I purchased. I am going to put 50-60k miles a year on this car, so mileage was not as important to me. I do prefer the updates on the 958.2, 2015 I think? They are all cosmetic as far as I know, but I prefer the updated look.

Condition and maintenance history trumps mileage every time. Options are also more important, in my opinion. I found an impeccably maintained 140k mile '15 CD that was in terrific condition compared to some of the sub 50k mile CDs I was looking at.

When I bought I went for a 16 because I liked the aesthetic updates. At same time I paid up for a lower mileage example knowing the diesel gate warranty would come in handy (which is has BIG TIME). My difference in cost up front has paid itself multi-fold with factory new parts, now at 85K miles I'm quite happy with going for best of both.

The 2013 is out of warranty from Porsche but the 2015 may still be eligible for the 10 year. Also check to see if the diesel gate fixes were done. In some states, at least Ca. you can't register without the fixes being completed. Some of the diesels also had oil leaks that were fixed by the dealer. If it was me and the diesel gates were done and no problems I'd go for the lower mileage.

I am under the impression the 13 and 14 had more issues with the timing chain cover leak. 15 and 16 are less prone to the leak. I have 104,000 in my 15 and it is bone dry. no leaks at all.

I recently had my leaks on my 2013 with 66k, they did reseal the timing chain cover. Lots of other things sealed. I'm pretty sure that the rear main engine seal was leaking- that's where I first noticed oil maybe 15k ago. The cover under the engine had dry oil on it when I first noticed it then at a diagnostic at the dealer they said the oil drain plug was leaking- it wasn't. I only have a few hundred miles since the repairs so I am hoping everything is fine.

This plus maintenance documentation. the .2's had quite a few 3.0L improvements, plus better (IMHO) cosmetics.

I’ve had my 2014 CD platinum since new and have 133k on it. Bone dry. Everything under the hood is original except wear items. I seem to recall that I read that 2014 was the last year that CDs were built in Germany with production then moving to Hungary (?) suggesting that the build quality might have gone down somewhat. Don’t know if there is anything to that or if it’s true.

I wonder what changed from 2013 to 2014 since 2013 was also built in Germany. I have wondered in the past if the diesels that were in Jeeps, which were also 6 cal. 3L were the same as Porsche. I might have heard they were built in Italy but I'm not sure. I still don't understand why Porsche/VW did the emissions cheat. I do think that not as many parts were changed for the fix on 2014 Audis as I was told by a friend with a 2014 Audi. This is all still a mystery. The additional problem has been that the production of diesels has been stopped by so many car makers.

From the Porsche website: “The Porsche Cayenne was built at Leipzig until 2017. Since then, it’s been assembled at the VW plant on the outskirts of Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava. While the vast majority were built at Leipzig, it was at Bratislava where the one millionth Cayenne rolled off the production line in December 2020.”

11th character of the VIN is the assembly plant:
L - LEIPZIG (CAYENNE, CARRERA GT, PANAMERA, MACAN),
K - OSNABRÜCK VW FACTORY (BOXSTER, CAYMAN, CAYENNE),
D - BRATISLAVA VW FACTORY (CAYENNE)

As above, Leipzig is the only actual Porsche plant the other assembly locations are VW.

THIS is a prime example of why condition trumps mileage. My car has 80k more miles, but because it was a California/Oklahoma car, it looks absolutely brand new underneath in comparison to this 54k mile unit.
