My 16 cayenne diesel log from purchase, issues, mods, maintenance and travel photos….
Hello fellas. I wanted to start this thread to show the progression of my newly acquired 2016 Cayenne diesel. In the past, my daily drivers were always Lexus cars and I've put nearly 750,000 miles on them combined in the last 15 years. My 06 GS350 had 340,000 trouble-free miles thanks to the normal maintenance I performed over the 5 years of ownership. I had similar threads in the clublexus forms and so it’s time to move up in cars and do it with my 56,000-mile Cayenne. I drive all over the east coast as a specialist on machinery so I usually drive 50-60k miles annually.
I would like to share with you guys all the maintenance, mods, issues, and trips I endure over the years in the diesel and give people an idea of just how many miles I can get out of the tried and true diesel platform.
I always loved the German engineering of Porsche products but was unsure of how reliable they would be for the number of miles I drive. Our first Porsche was a 2012 Panamera 4s with a 4.8-liter engine. What a fantastic car it was! My wife didn’t want to give it up but it was replaced with a 2016 cayenne turbo. That wasn't the most reliable car but it was so well built and it showed me just how good a highway cruiser it was! My dealer had a 21 992 base so I went down and I couldn’t get over the platform so we traded the turbo in on that. Now this is where the Porsche love took off for me. The 992 brought every emotion out of me and I couldn’t get over how good of a car they built. Driving it over the past two years has shown me just how reliable Porsche cars are and it was at this moment, that I wanted a Porsche for a daily!
After doing a lot of research I realized the Cayenne diesel was a gem that nobody knew about. If anyone looked at the performance numbers, they wouldn’t want the car when comparing it to a turbo but when I spoke with people who owned them long-term and dug deep into reviews, I realized this was the car for me. 34 mpg torque monster….What??
‘’The search was on and I was able to locate one-owner 2016 black with tan interior in FL from a member of the PCA forms. After speaking with him, I got a one-way ticket to West Palm Beach, FL
The car checked out and was as described but I wasn’t worried as the car still has the bumper-to-bumper warranty till November 2022
It’s always nice to buy from a fellow Porsche member who knows how to take care of his cars!
This was the very first time I've ever been happy and excited about a used car purchase because in the past I've been let down way too many times!
The drive home was a good 600 miles and I got familiar with just how brilliant this powertrain is on the highway!
This was back in December 2021 so diesel fuel was a lot cheaper than today's prices...
The new addition was finally home!
I had to give it a good wash and inspection before it went over to my local dealer for a checkup and some maintenance.
I was glad I did was the car because the drivers side headlight took in a lot of water….
I made an appointment with my local dealer to make sure everything checked out, replace the headlight and also perform some basic maintenance work…..transfer case, front and rear differential fluid, and a 4-wheel alignment.
As predicted, the car checked out and all was taken care of. My dealer replaced the front light under the warranty so that saved me a lot of money.... Thanks diesel-gate!
A few weeks later the new plate showed up
Black cars need black trim along with dark tint. If it went to my local guy to get the rear lights and reflective slightly tinted along with the trim and full tint including the windshield. It's hot in the South and I need it dark.
The paint was in good shape but it definitely was in need of a two stage paint correction along with ppf on the hood and a full ceramic coating. The bumper had already had the ppf applied but the hood was a half not a full so I wanted it replaced.
I also had the emblems removed during the process.
I couldn't believe the transformation in the paint and I couldn't believe this was a six year old car!
I wanted to change the diesel emblems on the side to black ones. I was told a good trick that worked out great......Black lighting will show you exactly where the old emblem was!
I wanted to change the oil myself to see the condition of the filter along with the fuel filter. I wanted to run the good stuff liquid-moly for the first change.
I decided to purchase this pump but I wasn't happy with it as it didn't get all the oil out. It was easier, but it wasn't the correct way so I knew I had to change it again soon with a proper drain and fill.
Also added the def.....
I'll stop here so I don't loose this first post. I've performed a few other things to the car and ill post those up soon. This past year I drove my 21 ES300h and drove it 53,000 trouble free miles. My 21 year old son has worked hard to purchase the car from me and as of next week i’ll be driving the Cayenne full time putting 800-1000 miles on it per week. As of now it’s only got 59k miles on it. Time to turn those miles up!
Congrats and I will be interested to hear how it goes. I have owned 3 CD’s and together they have covered over 400k miles with no significant issues. LOVE THEM! A few comments:
oil change- I use the Mityvac and the key is making sure oil temp is over 180. Doing that I can change the oil start to finish in 15 min or less. When I do a more major service and have another reason to put it on a lift and pull the lower trays, then I do a traditional oil change. Like you I was worried I wasn’t getting all the oil out and also I wanted to inspect the drain plug. What I have learned is that I do get all the oil out with the pump and I have yet to find anything notable on the plug. (If you do remove the drain plug 100% make sure you use the OEM crush washer, it’s oval not flat like a regular Cayenne, it will leak… ask me how I know…)Knowing that I have zero reservations about doing the pump method.
DEF- it is much cheaper, easier and you create a lot less packaging waste simply filling the DEF tank at any truck stop using the DEF they have on the fuel island. Super convenient and if you buy at a high volume stop (Loves/Flying J/etc) they selling thousands of gallons so it’s not old.
Thanks for your reply I did have the engine warm but I’m not sure I had it above 180 as you suggested. All of my research has also told me that an OEM crush washer and drain plug is the only way unless you want leaks... 22-foot pounds of torque to keep it locked there and it’s done. I did do an engine flush recently just to make sure I can start fresh with my oil changes. I can’t believe how dirty a Diesel engine can get! The def is something I am new to and your suggestion makes total sense. I’ll post more in a few!
Does using generic DEF void any warranty on the diesels? I suppose as long as it meets the specs of the Porsche/VW/Audi stuff its ok.
No it wouldn’t. I’m planning on doing a tune with the EGR and DPF delete by the beginning of next year. The turbo lag is a serious issue and that EGR system is a real issue when not maintained.

I highly recommend this to any car lover!
Reading the forms has really opened up my eyes on how dirty a diesel engine can be and so I decided to look into why I had such a lag……this EGR isn’t helping matters…..
What a difference in power, lag and the car ran a lot better after I put it all back together. After seeing this and reading further into what VW did to fix the emissions, I’ve gotta delete these systems and tune it.
Added the Liqui-moly fuel system cleaner in the tank of gas and as I drove it, I can feel the car running better and better. Highly advised to all of you diesel owners!
I also decided to do an engine oil flush to make sure all the old oil was out of the engine.
Added this can into the warm engine. Let it run for 15 minutes at idle, drain it along with a filter change and fill it up with generic oil…..run it at idle for another 15 minutes, drain it and replace the oil filter a second time. Then I put in the good stuff.
I was amazed at how much came out after the second oil change. A lot of guys out there swear by these products and I see why.
Changed the Air filter with a K&N, replaced the cabin filter and replaced the wipers with new ones from Suncoast.
So the Cayenne is ready to go for another 5K miles but before I take this out on all the road trips, I need my defense gear installed. I’ve put this system in my past two cars and I won’t drive around without it!
Time to do the ALP Priority install along with some upgrades along the way.
-Four ALP laser heads (two front two rear)
-One tx sensor in the front
-Front and rear Net Radar heads
-LED Headlights (5000K)
-LED Fogs (5000K)
-Tinted side-markers
-A horn that actually fits the truck
After this two day install I was a true believer on how well a Porsche is made…..Superior to anything else I’ve worked on! Impressive Porsche engineering!
That’s all for now and my next install is going to be a dash cam and Apple car play integration into the existing pcm but I’m still doing research on this as I’m not sure a complete stereo system with amps, sub and speakers will be the way to go. I don’t have Bose and the basic radio is just awful and in need of a major upgrade. I’m an audio file and coming from Mark&Levinson in my past cars, burmester in the Panamera I’ve gotta do something soon! Suggestions? I was also thinking of upgrading the stereo for a 360 camera setup as well. I installed an aftermarket unit in my truck a while back and while it wasn’t easy, the end result was good.
Great write up and updates!
You are making me actively look for a CD now. Bummed that I didn't get the one on Cars/Bids few days ago that went less than $25k (958.2 w/120k miles).
Thank you
The ALP install maybe should be made a DIY, although, do you really need to pull the bumpers off? I've always wanted the ALP, but couldn't justify the cost since my highway driving is limited in general and after 2020, working from home has been a staple.

958.2 for less than $25k? Doesn't sound right....I've seen one sold for $39k I think and high miles too, on cars and bids as well
Welcome to the CD club! Truly under appreciated machines. We’ve had ours since new…9 years and 112k miles. It does mostly local duty but living in TX has seen some long trips. What a great machine. Some slick mods…what are those bulbs you replaced? The HID main beam?
Your garage and tool set up looks better than most Porsche dealers. Do the horns just replace the stock horns? Diesel fuel in Ca. is $6.29 per gallon! I bet you get better milage after you cleaned the egr. California smogs diesels and I don't think you can eliminate any of the diesel gate stuff or add a chip without the smog computer picking up the change and failing you. On the other hand California does not have any safety inspections, so you can drive without lights, brakes, etc.

Don't give up trying to find one. It's worth the wait!

I did so many DIY write-ups on the Acura and Lexus forms, I seemed to spend more time on the write-ups and answering questions than doing the actual work. As I get older, time is more important than anything!
You do have to remove the bumpers as the Net radar heads can't be mounted in the grill and I don't want to see them in the car interior. You get interference when mounted behind a grill. They must be mounted behind a smooth surface like the bumper to get the maximum range. Ask me how I know....... This is my third install so I've figured out a lot along the way.
Getting the heads in the front were easy but wiring the rear laser heads in the tail gate was a whole other project! It's not the easiest install!

Alliexpress. I wanted to see if I liked them black before I paint the original metal ones that came off the car and ditch the plastic black ones.

Thank you sir. Gotta love these platforms and I replaced the headlights and fogs with LED BULBS. I took out the original hid bulbs and i’ll tell you, it's a great mod!

Thanks. Yes those horns replaced the existing factory horns and I was able to mount them to the existing factory mount/location. Here in NC, we can get away with a few things but they're strict in CA!

Trust me, I know about snaking wires into the rear lid. Ran a rear camera through the roof, then the ducts for the lid.
