Cayenne Diesel Oil Temps
So I live in Denver, which means driving up sustained grades to go over the passes to go ski.
That means being in boost and under load for long periods at a time. I've been seeing oil temps of 245-250 while going 80mph up the passes.
Is this is line to what others are seeing?

No personal experience with it yet, but that doesn't seem out of the norm, since fully warmed up oil temps seem to sit at 230. Before scoring the CD, I did LOTS of reading on the Jeep/Dodge EcoDiesel forums (also a 3.0L V6 with similar packaging constraints, especially in the Cherokee), and they have seen similar oil temps when pulling long grades, and 275-280 when towing up a grade (The Mercedes BlueTec and BMW 35d crowd don't seem to work theirs as hard).
Since any decent synthetic oil is good past 300°, I wouldn't worry. If anything, you're ensuring that any fuel vapors are being FULLY burned out of the oil. You're doing your engine a good deed by running it this hard! (How's that for rationalization?)
Though our grades aren't as prolonged as yours, I'm sure I'll have a good report for you this year when I pull my trailer through the mountains in 90-100° ambient temps.

I know the oil is up to it, just wondering if that's normal.
Curious to see what my oil temps are when towing the race car this summer. Coolant temps are rock solid at 200F. Oil temps on my last Cayenne Turbo didn't vary much but the coolant temps did

Sounds like your new truck has something hanging from the bottom... you should pull over to check it out.
My oil temps don't have much towing versus not towing, the system's ability to maintain stable temps for coolant and oil are pretty robust. I think nominal is in the 220s for mine.

Ha! I'll get right on that Ryan.
Good to hear your oil temps don't vary much, but you don't climb mountains, not sure I'd classify what's near you as hills even!

As far as oil temps on my CTT, I see some slight variance, but minimal. Interesting to note oil temps run generally 10 degrees cooler when in Sport mode versus not. Not sure if the CD responds the same when in Sport mode?

I see oil temps of 220 F in my CD, no towing.

By the way.. The gauges are lying to us. Well, protecting us from us. Doing my scanning, I can watch the coolant and oil temps fluctuate while on the highway, presumably as the shutters open and close, and the thermostat does the same. The coolant gauge stayed dead on 200° F and oil temp showed 210-230. The Torque app showed anywhere from 160-200° on coolant and the oil temp varied from 170-220°. So while it's not protecting us from seeing an overheating condition, the true story is a little hidden.
I can COMPLETELY understand why though. I can only imagine the complaints.. "My temperature gauges are all over the place. There's something wrong with this car. My previous (insert car here) never did this!"

Eskimo, all the manufacturers have been "weighting" the gauges for years now, for exactly the reason you say, so people don't freak out because the gauges are reading up/down, etc.

Porsche seems to like to run the oil hot on all their newer stuff.
On my old 944 Turbo I kept oil temps under 200 - even when on track. Lindsey monster oil cooler kit, aftermarket gauge with pan sensor.
My wife's Boxster runs at 220 just shuffling around town. Friends with 981's who have put them on the track are seeing 260.
My CD, so far, seems to settle in around 220 - whether in traffic, highway, or towing.

i just returned from a Lassen trip (big elevation gain and very hot outside temp). Outside temp in the valley and foothills was 105-111 and for the first time heading up the grade near Shingleton the oil temp climbed to 170… a record high for my CD. Coolant temp remained at 200, with a single flash to 204 for a few seconds… i was driving at 65 in normal mode (ie “sport” mode not engaged).
On this trip I didnt have the CD in “sport” mode however I think on previous trips I did… on the return trip through the valley (speed of 71-73) seeing outside temps between 100-105 the oil temp fluctuated between 240-260… it was making me nervous… engaging the “sport” mode seemed to drop the oil temp 20 or so degrees. Im suspecting the “sport” mode may set the active grill shutters to open, in anticipation for spirited driving… hence the reduction in oil temp ?
Ill ask the dealer at its next service if they have any knowledge of how sport mode influences oil temp and the grill shutters.

@MJG911 Wow, 7,000 lbs enclosed. Is your Cayenne a diesel? Would be very interested to hear more about the trailer and your setup.
