I don't think it's really a problem of adhesion. The seatback where the clips attach is a fiber/cardboard kind of material. The clips just pull the top layer off regardless of how strong of a bond you make.

This is what I found. To counter this, as best I could, without actually riveting the exterior of the panel, I sanded and used 3M 90 high heat spray. Then I drilled and riveted homemade spring steel hooks to the lower two brackets and made wider spring steel panel clips for the three uppers to provide high temp shear strength and a degree of flexibility to reduce shock/impact loads from knees, feet, gear, etc. One year in and both panels are solid. Everything else I tried didn’t survive very long.

As a reference, driver side first fell off at year 15, passenger side at 17. So I can’t complain too much.

Happened to my girlfriend yesterday, looks like it is time for a trip to the hardware store for some adhesive!

The cardboard liner is so much weaker than the epoxy is the problem.

Yep. Tried the two part epoxy and it lasted less than a week. This time when it fell off it broke the clips! Aghhh. On the other hand it is a 16 year old car...

I just glued the upper clips back on mine with window weld urethane.

I made sure to score the cardboard with some sandpaper this last time. So far it’s held up to the Oklahoma heat.

well lads and lasses....I am back at fixing it again
I did buy two new prong clips that slip into the larger black plastic spacers, the original ones got pretty badly mangled up last time in my first repair effort
these are a direct replacement part and readily available

audi part number 8Z0867276 Front Seat Back Panel Clip Trim for 2005-18 Audi A6 Quattro
8Z0867276 Front Seat Back Panel Clip Trim for 2005-18 Audi A6 Quattro | eBay

I think this time I am putting the clips and spacers in place on the two out sides of the seat and then using weather strip adhesive on the roughed up card board backing and on the roughed up black plastic spacer then putiing the rear seat down and backing the front seat with the back in place up against it. my back panel has the middle spacer still in place probably beause that clip doesnt have any prongs so that along with some blue tape marking boundaries should help me line up everything.

any different ideas? thanks bob

Great idea. I am thinking of going with the 3M panel adhesive and the Audi clip route. Edit- I don't think the Audi clips will work- they are completely different from mine.

3M Panelbond has been holding mine on more securely than when new since 2018. They both came loose in the paint drying booth during my widebody build.

Sandpaper was not doing much on my seat back so I used a small wire wheel in a hand drill to scuff it up.

I had this issue earlier this year and designed and manufactured replacement clips that have been holding up well. Reach out to me if you need replacements.
