Default Check oil level warning is on, but dipstick shows it's fine

I have an 08 Turbo and just got the check oil level warning yesterday. I checked it out at the dipstick and the oil reads almost exactly halfway between the min/max. What gives?

What gives? You are losing oil or it is being consumed at the reported rate (1L per 1k miles IIRC). Add oil until you are at max level and check for leaks.

Dipsticks don't lie. Fill to the mark and check daily. Be happy you don't have later model that doesn't even have one; you'd have to take to the dealer the check the bloody oil level.

Having a later model - I've never had to take it to the dealer to check the oil level. The dash display does that just fine, and indicates in 250cc intervals how low you are.

Plus if you have a Durametric or ICarScan tool you can measure the level on the oil sensor.

I'd still like a dipstick, but I don't find myself running to the dealer as you imply is necessary when I want to check the oil level.

My reply was in the context of the sensor and dipstick not agreeing, per the OP. What will you do if the sensor goes wobbly as the OPs may have? But never mind; there's no way for you to know 'til your oil temp alarm goes off, is there?

If the sensors goes "wobbly" going to the dealer won't help a bunch either.. in that case the only way to know how much oil is in there is to drain and refill the oil. Something you'd probably do anyway while replacing the sensor.

Unless the engine has a dipstick.

I don't understand what your point is.. so you have a dipstick, isn't THAT special.

I've got a 2013 911C4S and my sensor went bad. First it showed a little low so I added about 1/2qt. All fine for a few days then it showed overfilled. No dipstick. The dealer said it's a problem with the sensor they've seen many times. I did a little bit of an early oil change and changed the sensor and all is fine again. I've heard BMW had had a lot of problems with theirs too.
Obviously a different sensor, 911 to Cayenne but probably the same manufacturer and the internals of it may even be the same. They are capacitance sensors and can go bad if they get an internal leak.
