Cayenne and P.D.E. (very long)

Hey John, I sure appreciate the low down you took the time to post here. I will also be waiting for my favorite car mag to review it and I will be pretty early in line for a test drive come March 15.
Ken, I am seriously considering a Cayenne. The reasoning so far is that I have two Gwagens. My wife drives on of them, it doesn't get used off-road, at least not like I use the other one. I would like a fast, good handling SUV with good cargo space, good towing ability, and passenger space for front and back seat 6+ footers. It will likely end up off-road some as well. Probably in stuff a little beyond the X5, Lexus RX or Infinity FX realm of capability. So it does appeal to me in the same way an ML55 appeals to me. Since I enjoy fairly unique machinery in my garage, the Cayenne is a tempting choice. It will tow my 4000lb boat, or my 5000lb car and trailer combo. It has more cargo space than any of the above mentioned. Important when you have a 150lb dog you like to bring on occasion.
All that said, I am not sold. I have not seen it in person, I have not driven it. From what I can discern so far, it looks like it fits my particular set of needs and, I will be giving it a serious look.

Yeah, different strokes you know <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> That is my third one, I have been driving them for about six years now. We looked at the ML and X5 when my wife wanted a 4wd. After driving those and the G500, SHE liked the ride better. Her car is a BMW 750iL, certainly not a hard riding machine. I have taken my '95 and given it a 2.5" lift, pretty much just stiffer springs. I still find it perfectly acceptable. My mom was riding in it the other day, she drives a new Jeep GC, she complimented me on the G's nice ride <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Of course I have 600lb/in front springs in my 928, so I may be a little jaded.
BTW the G was designed in the mid seventies for civilian use, first sold in 1979.

i hada 1982 Unimog pick up truck in highschool. man! that thing had more ground clearance than a Hummer...it was alot of fun but I had to sell it because i had to pay my college tuition,,,,,damn, i miss that truck....nothing like it

in LA, the G500 is only driven by the well heeled status concious soccer mom.....I have never seen a "dude" drive one in LA, Same thing with the X5. They are turning out ot be Soccer mom mobiles...same thing will happen with the Pepper.

John, let's use a little logic here.
A) You sell Porsches correct? Correct.
B) If you sold Porsches and were not enthusiastic about them you would either be:
1) Doing poorly in sales or
2) Hating your job because you didn't like your product
Therefore:
C) Any brand you sell you need to be informed about and enthusiastic about to be a good salesperson and enjoy your job right? Right.
No I don't sell Infiniti's or Porsche's but have had the opportunity to compare the FX45 and the Cayenne to each other in detail including driving both (albeit on-road not off) and given my selection criteria I found the FX45 to be a better car for me.
Doesn't mean it will be a better car for everyone. Doesn't mean it is the best car in the world. It simply means that given certain criteria is scores higher than the Cayenne in those criteria.
If I am "arguing" anything it is that my selection criteria are likely to be more common and thus represent more buyers than say Brent's selection criteria.
Which leads to the question of why Porsche targeted the segement of the market they did and if other Porsche owners are happy with Porsche's decision to do so, as well as whether or not we are happy with the product Porsche churned out to try to appeal to that segment of the market.
As I said previously, I'm not too thrilled by either the segment or the product and concerned about the long term impact to Porsche which I think might be negative. I could be wrong, could turn out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I still think the Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard for those who don't recognize the actor's name and who did the first 996 commercial voice-overs in the U.S.) Carrera C4S commercial was funny, but mentioning someone's mother is not, especially when she is ill and under medical care at the moment but I would expect an uncaring SOB to know that... you know where you can put your Pepper...
