Okay guys, a little bit of calm please. When I started this thread it wasn't meant to be an excuse for people to hurl insults at each other.

It was meant to shed a little light on the question of manufacturers continuing to pursue the SUV route, in this case apparently at the expense of the Allroad - a car owned by several people here and well liked.

Ooh sure Christian, like you didn't want to light some of us up

Ummm, Orangemarlin, welcome to the friendly, sometimes spirited, but rarely nasty world of Rennlist - I think

BTW, the X5 fit one of our 3 dogs in the boot - sideways, and the rear "passenger" seats are an oxymoron.

My response is nestled within your post...

[quote]Originally posted by Orangemarlin:
I love when Audi owners troll in other car forums. It's that envy thing all over.

*** Well I, and others here, own an Audi as well as Porsche so don't think of this as trolling ***

The problem with the Allroad is design. No testosterone induced American male is going to drive a station wagon.

*** You're using the word "American" so I might agree with you. Some American's don't 'get' the concept of the allroad quite as well as they 'get' the concept of a massively overweight, oversized SUV. I consider myself to have the right amount of testerone and I love our allroad ***

The X5 does everything the Allroad can, but we all know it's really just a slightly bigger/higher/beefier 540i. And the market loves it.

But the biggest problem with Audi vehicles is that they just are not BMW's. Audi constantly tries to market itself as an alternative to BMW. Unfortunately, their engineers are targeting Mercedes. BMW and Mercedes are customers that only meet when one hits another.

*** Agreed to a point. They are the 'other' German car. Wouldn't agree that they're target BMW buyer to any degree more than they are targeting Mercedes buyers. Their target is affluent people who care about their cars and are prepared to pay a premium for performance, build quality, safety, etc. The same things that attracts both BMW and M-B customers with one exception. Audi buyers are less concerned about the badge. Many BMW owners are such because of the badge. You're right it's not a BMW - the audi is much better in terms of build quality. It's also better than Mercedes - and I've bought around $400,000 of M-B in the last 4 years so I should know. ***

Here's the problem with Audi cars (S versions included):

1. Tiptronic transmission. What's wrong with a manual? Or a real F1 transmission a'la SMG from BMW.

*** They come in manuals dip****. ***

2. Soft suspension. Nice for an old man, but body roll can induce vomiting.

*** Oh c'mon. This is an exageration if you are excluding S and RS - or an X5 LOL ****

3. Imprecise steering. There's just no feedback to the steering wheel from the road.
*** Answer same as 2. However, I suspect you're talking about US spec cars, many of which come with the servotronic already installed. Takes 10 minutes to remove and you have yourself a winner. ***

4. Marquee just doesn't have the panache of BMW, Mercedes or Porsche. Maybe it's that Volkswagen thing.

*** True. But I guess you're in it for the badge. ****

5. Quattro is the biggest bogosity flung at the car-buying public. Driving a RWD car in the snow is absolutely easy with the right snow tires. And don't tell me you can take my S6, with the Z-rated sport tires is going anywhere in the snow. OK, it might go downhill. No stopping power. Quattro is a waste of money, weight and power. It works on a 996 Turbo because you need to overcome the oversteer. Audi understeers, and that's just plain boring.

*** You may well be right Mr. Perfect Driver. However, for the average housewife, the addition of quattro when the elements start to reduce the odds is something I'd rather my wife have than not have. To say it's a waste of money, weight and power is a little ridiculous given that the improvement in safety is worth the money, weight, and loss of power ***

I own an A6 and S6. I know of what I speak. And the S6, a fine automobile, just doesn't have the driving feeling of an M5.

*** Don't know why you own such cars as you obviously hate Audi. Go and buy the M5 if that's whatyou want. ****

As for Othello's comments. What a putz. I'm getting so tired of these anti-american comments, and I'm a left-wing socialist type of expatriate who lived half his life in Europe and the other in the US.

*** That's obvious. You adopt the typical liberal, left-wing approach to debate which is to revert to name calling ***

What Othello forgets, given his typically Eurocentrism of greatness, is that the cardiovascular disease rate is much higher in Western Europe than in the US. Why? Because every european thinks it's his or her fundamental right to smoke cancer sticks. Obesity isn't good for the health, but smoking is a guarantee to death. So what you find in Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, and Rome are a bunch of skinny, white-skinned, cancer and cardiology patients-to-be.

Oh, and let us not forget that those Americans saved those Western European cancerous lungs from les Bosch twice and les Internationale once. I think President Oil is a jerk, but at least he has a pair of *********, severely lacking in Schroeder, Chirac, and the other countries of Europe that cowtow to Germany and France. At least Blair, President Oil's lap dog shows some testicular activity.

Othello...keep your racist remarks to yourself.

*** I'd be happy to debate you any day of the week, perhaps in the OT forum about America, Europe, President Bush etc. I assure you that you will not win ay debate with me due to the fact that you liberal views will blind you from any form of reality. Perhaps we could start with why you call Mr. Bush President Oil. I'm sure something very original and thought provoking will emerge. Won't hold my breath ***

and finally, my remarks are not racist. See, there ya go again with the usual bed wetting liberal knee jerk comment. Say something remotely along the lines of defining people with any kind of facts that are not complimentary and you hear the liberals scream like little girls "racist.. racist".. give me a break. Saying that there are a lot of obese people in America is a fact - not racist. Saying that Americans prefer big plates of food compared to Europeans is a fact - look at the size of the portions. Look bud, you're obviously a super educated, well paid individual looking at your stable of cars so I'm suprised that you have posted such a negative message concerning Audi and yet you have gone out and bought 2 of them.

Othello, you're one rude, condescending, arrogant twit.

1. S6, RS6, S8 do not come with manuals. And they are supposed to be their performance cars. Yes, I admit that you can find a manual here and there. I tried to get one on an A6 4.2...ooops. None available.

2. I own an M5. Nuff said.

3. My audis serve one purpose. they are so lacking in charachter that i use them to shuttle kids. I'm not going 0-100 in 11.5 seconds with children in the back seat. Guess you do.

4. What's education or money got to do with cars. Each of them is leased or financed. GT2 was purchased with home equity (bad stupid idiotic financial move, but it's a GT2 for chrissakes.

5. You are a racist. And I am a liberal. But guess what? I paid my taxes, and let's just say I don't have a shelter. I was an officer in the Navy. I vote in every election. And I get to say whatever I want. Stuck somewhere in the Bill of rights. I know you right wingers forgot about the bill of rights, but they still are law.

Granted I might be guilty of the odd "tweak" for a reaction , but done in the above mentioned "spirit" of Rennlist and always I hope respectful and relevant to the forum and topic.

Guys, if you want to find a corner in the internet playground to see who can shout louder and longer, don't let me stop you - just please not this corner ...

MY NOTES IN YOUR QUOTE. SORRY TO USE CAPS BUT IT'S MORE CONVENIENT FOR YOU TO SEE MY REMARKS FROM YOURS.

Othello, you're one rude, condescending, arrogant twit.

*** HEY THANKS FOR CALLING ME THAT. I GUESS THAT YOU MUST NOT FIT THAT DESCRIPTION OTHERWISE YOU'D BE CALLING ME NAMES. OH!! WAIT A MINUTE YOU ARE CALLING ME NAMES. DOH!

1. S6, RS6, S8 do not come with manuals. And they are supposed to be their performance cars. Yes, I admit that you can find a manual here and there. I tried to get one on an A6 4.2...ooops. None available.

SO LET ME SEE IF I HAVE THIS STRAIGHT. YOU SAY THEY ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN MANUAL BUT THERE ARE A FEW HERE OR THERE. HMMMM.. INTERESTING (BUT DON'T FORGET, I'M THE TWIT)

2. I own an M5. Nuff said.

YOU OWN A LOT OF CARS MAN... over $560,000. I KNOW MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THIS KIND OF MONEY INVESTED IN VEHICLES AND THERE'S SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH ALL OF THEM A) THEY'RE NOT LEASED B) THEY DON'T USE HOME EQUITY TO PAY FOR CARS. I'M BEGINNING TO SMELL A LITTLE BULL****.

3. My audis serve one purpose. they are so lacking in charachter that i use them to shuttle kids. I'm not going 0-100 in 11.5 seconds with children in the back seat. Guess you do.

NO I DON'T. NEITHER DOES MY WIFE. PERSONALLY WE CONSIDERED THE S6 BUT THOUGHT THAT WAS TOO SPORTY AND ACTUALLY TOO EXPENSIVE A VEHICLE TO 'SHUTTLE' A 1 YEAR OLD AND A 3 YEAR OLD IN. WE DON'T SEE THE POINT OF HAVING SPILLED JUICE AND COOKIES, CANDY, ETC, ALL OVER AN EXPENSIVE CAR.

4. What's education or money got to do with cars. Each of them is leased or financed. GT2 was purchased with home equity (bad stupid idiotic financial move, but it's a GT2 for chrissakes.

A LOT ACTUALLY. PRETTY DIFFICULT TO BUY ALMOST $600,000 IN VEHICLES (INCLUDING THE HARDLEY-ABLESON). FURTHERMORE, THE EDUCATION WOULD HAVE STOPPED YOU FROM USING AN APPRECIATING ASSET TO BUYT A DEPRECIATING ASSET. THAT GT2 IS GOING TO COST YOU A LOT OF MONEY - AND WHY? YOU HAVE A 996TT (HE SAYS, TONGUE FIRMLY PRESSED IN CHEEK) SO WHY WOULD YOU NOT SELL IT TO BUY THE GT2?

I'D LOVE TO SEE A PHOTO OF ALL 'YOUR' CARS LINED UP IN YOUR DRIVEWAY.

ACTUALLY I AM NOT A RIGHT-WINGER. IF ANYTHING I AM RIGHT OF CENTER BUT NOTHING EXTREME. I PAY MY TAXES ALSO MY FRIEND. YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE DEFINITION OF RACIST.

I THINK I MAY HAVE TO CHANGE CAREERS IF BEING AN OFFICER IN THE NAVY CAN AFFORD YOU THE LUXURY OF BEING ABLE TO PAY IN THE REGION OF $10,000 PER MONTH IN LEASE PAYMENTS. OR PERHAPS YOUR WIFE IS THE PROVIDER IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD.

Oy.. RedTilapia.. Sorry, lyingMotherF..damn, wil I ever get this right, OrangeMarlin..phew

Saw this post of yours..

"I carry all my insurance through one company, Allstate, so I might be getting a better deal than the rest of you, but everything I see is really high.
I have a 996tt w/X50 located in rochester, NY. I pay about 1100 per year w/$1000 deductible. For my GT2, which I keep in California, I pay $750/year with $1000 deductible. New Yorkers get screwed. And you have lousy weather. And a loser baseball team.

I'm glad I live in California most of the time"

First off, there's no way on this planet you're insuring a GT2 for $750/year. Listen dickwad, your H-D will be more expensive than that. Assuming you have one of course.

I have 4 cars, 3 homes, 2 motorcycles, and a contents policy that'll make your eyes water, a couple of million dollars worth of life insurance ALL THROUGH STATE FARM and I have never made a motor vehicle claim in the 11 years I have had my policy with them and my 996 C2 is right at $2,000/year. My $10,000 motorcycles (of which, I have 2) cost $600 and $700 per year!!

More to the point, I ran the details of insuring a 996TT through Progressive.com using California state minimums, a $1000 deductable, 57 year old driver, no claims, no tickets, etc. In other words th ebest you could get. The amount, $1,824 per year. And that's a car $70,000 cheaper than the GT2!! I'd love to hear your explanation as to how you get your insurance through Allstate of all companies at such a low price.

To the rest of the people reading this thread I apologise for going down a path that nobody wants to go down but when I get insulted by somebody who is so obviously a lying SOB I take exception.

Why don't you take you requirement to exercise your ego somewhere else. And take your virtual garage with you.

Hell, I think I'm beginning to agree with you !!

Currently in agony from suspected slipped disc and the last two posts from Othello are the first things that have made me smile all day...

Seriously though, some decorum please.......

This thread is even funnier than the 'seeking help from divorced people' one...

Geez, one makes a simple observation about a few Americans being fat bastards, and you get a guy with such a high opinion of him self that he actually thinks you mean HIM.

Obviously a very insecure individual, (highlighted by the need to list half a dozen vehicles and more than one address in his signature).

Orangemarlin? I guess Bluewhale was already taken.

Othello - whereabouts in blighty are you from?

Has Othello uncovered a phony? Must admit to being both impressed an puzzled over O-fish's stable and disdain for his Audi's...almost made me go out and plunk down a deposit on a P-fish

...almost

Once again folks.. I am sorry for the obvious OT nature of the posts. I mean, this is about the Cayenne and the thread got going about the allroad, but I couldn't resist.

I'm just suprised that PinkDolphin hasn't listed every article of furniture he owns as well.

And I'm also sorry about my statements about the fatties.. especially if you're sporting a Body Mass Index in the triple digits LOL oops

I'm from Manchester originally and we have a unique sense of humor that usually involves somebody being ripped apart followed by yourself being equally torn to shreds. It's all good fun and the best part about it is being able to poke fun at yourself and not get too serious. We've all got our defining characteristics that can be quite funny depending on your angle of view. Hey, I see a lot of fat bastard Americans - but I also see a lot of English people with Austin Power's teeth!

When you come from Europe where the cars are small, the houses are small, the road are small, the food portions are small, etc. (Thank God our dicks are huge) to America and see how everything is so big and how Americans, for the most part, get in to the bigger is better you can't help but notice it. But more power to you. When my family and I go over to the UK we rent a 745iL from a friend of mine who owns a BMW dealership and to be honest it's a pain in the rear because all the parking spaces are so small and the multi-storey car parks are impossible to negotiate because the car's so big. If gas wasn't $6 a gallon and the roads more than 10 feet wide we might be into the big vehicles also.

My wife, an American, observes things about the English that I would never pick up because it's normal for me. For instance, she can't understand why, after arriving at a persons home, we spend the first 20 minutes talking about the roads and directions we took to get there and how any of 100 other combinations of roads would have been better and shaved 5 minutes off the total journey time of 50 minutes. And the last 20 minutes before we leave we talk about which way we're going to go back. Perfectly normal if you ask me but she thinks we're mad. Racist bitch!

O,

I thought I could recognise the classic Northern rapists wit in your posts. I'm originally from just up the road - Warrington - and worked in Altrincham for several years.

ROFL...

Let me see if I truly understand what you did...

Not content with living in the North West of England where it pisses down with rain every other day, you decide to move to the North West of the USA where it rains every other day and every other day in between times?

Smart... very smart.

Well I originally came from the Irlam area so you'll know exactly where I'm from. Still get over there every 6 weeks or so.
