Gents:

The allroad and S6 Avant both offer optional 3rd row seating (read: kids only). The rear seats will fit 3 adults, but I wouldn't want to be the middle guy for any extended trip. The 4.2L will offer plenty of hauling power, but if you really are hauling around that many people and toys all the time, you're in Suburban country.

BTW, "P-fish" (read: Porsche-catfish) is my endearing term used to describe the looks of "the Savior of Porsche" being debated on this forum.

Here it is...captured on film...returning to its native habitat...after spawning on-shore...

mpm,

I stand corrected. I did find the option of a "removable child's rear facing bench" on the website, but have gone through the 2003 brochure several times and not found the option listed.

Steve,

I'm headoing over to Clair today (to check out a tt ). I'll ask. I'm sure it is available, but not many takers.

Guess anyone with kids these days wouldn't be caught dead in a "station wagon" - when you could be sitting high in an SUV or mini-van

BTW, there are plenty of '02s around, also it probably could be ordered seperately.

Steve,

Yep, child rear facing seat available for '03 as a $750 option - pretty expensive option for junior

privates8 - now you may have to buy one as you have no more excuses

carsdirect.com quotes a price of $36K and change for a 2002 with the basic package. there's mention of a special dealer rebate for buyers who take delivery before 9/30.

FWIW a few weeks ago I was looking at an S6 at a local dealer. First he said that it would be "around $60K OTD"...walked around a bit and he said that "$56-57K would probably do it". Got to talking about cars, my 993, etc...by the time I left he said that he wouldn't be surprised if they would do $53-54K OTD That seems like a great deal if one were willing to spend that much on a wagon!

David and mpm,

It is kind of funny, but I like the idea of the allroad because there are occasions when I really need to have the all wheel drive and ground clearance. At the same time, after having had three Jeeps and a Suburban as a daily vehicle over the past 15 years, I really like the performance and handling of the allroad at the lowest setting with the manual transmission.I am kind of sick of driving a SUV when 90% of the time, it is not necessary.

The rear seat option is not even a question for me. My kids are 17, 15 and 13- so it is not suited to their adult sized frames.

And the wife, who drives an X5 thinks that the allroad is not macho enough and I should get an XC90- but I am leaning heavily towards getting the allroad.

David,

I just looked at the carsdirect.com site and noticed that the pricing you referred to was below invoice on the 2002. They only take $1k off of MSRP on the 2003 though.

Steve,

We love our allroad. I've gone as far as saying if forced into one car (to fit our needs) it would be an allroad.

The road manors (and I would agree #1 setting - which it automatically goes to when speeds average > 75 mph - is great for the highway) are superb, the suspension over rough road is tremendous (no body vibration and minimal road noise - just the "ping" of the tires). And the higher settings for tougher conditions are nice to haves.

The 2.7tt is a tough little engine. It's not as swift as found in the S4 (due mainly to the weight), but it's no slouch either. We have an auto with tip-on-the-wheel, not as responsive as the 6 speed, but the wife didn't want to shift (and it's nice to have an auto in the family - and playing with the tip is fun). It's no racer, but it will embarrass may a "sport sedan" out there - if that's your thing. If you haven't driven one you should.

The interior is class leading - if not industry leading. The gadgets are great (the downward tilting right mirror parktronic combo makes for perfect parallel parks every time). The build quality, fit & finish, quality materials really qualify it as a luxury car. We did a 1800 mile two week trip to Maine this summer with two of our friends and the allroad was quite the travel companion - and fun to run off road.

And from an exterior standpoint, I think the two tone contrasts (with brush aluminum accents), wheel/tire combo (we went with the flat 5 spokes) makes the allroad unique - kind of a bulldog ugly quality. I can't get over the number of comments we get on the car. In the sea of SUVs the allroads looks standout.

For $42K (what we paid) it's surpassed all of my expectations. Our other contender was another Passat wagon, but after driving around in the S4 my wife really began to like the upgraded feel of Audi. I would have preferred a Rover, but at $70K it was out of range - and getting the dogs in would require lifting.

And yes, I was holding out to see the Cayanne - but it's taken too long to get this thing to market. And once the pictures started showing up, we went out and bought the allroad. Sorry but the P-fish looks too broken up - like combos of a bunch of different designs - all of which which don't work together. I'd buy the VW version instead.

Good luck with your decision...

Here in Boulder, CO I see more Allroads every day. There are a ton of them here. At least 6 up our street alone. Must be the capital of Audi's here in Boulder. We love our allroad, although the engine and the tranny attached is slow on the get go, it is a sweet ride on the highway. Cruises right along at 90mph.
On a side note, when I was going up to Vail, CO yesterday (Sept. 15th) I saw 2 test Cayennes! I caught up to them at the top of Vail Pass. Both jet black with all sorts of gizmos attached to the outsides of them. I drove along side them for a while and was in awe to see them that close up. Wonder when they are going to get here? Now I will tell you, once they are avaialble, I will bet that Boulder will be filled with them. Seriously. And you want to talk about too much money for an SUV? Come on. These things are going to cost in the 60K+ range and people here in Boulder will eat them up. So the Allroad for the money will seem to be a pretty good buy. If you can imagine that!

Talking

Rear facing "child seat" wont do! I need forward facing and comfortable with easy ingress/egress hence the Navigator. ALSO I NEEEEEEED the vcr/DVD player in the vehicle it keeps the kids quiet and not fighting. We also need some room for "stuff" which the wagons do no give. We really took a hard look at the New Volvo but the ingress/egress is a problem for the third row seating. So there's lots o0f reasons NOT to get the all road /wagon for us!!! need a couple of these after the day I just had!

Are you getting the transmission hesitation when you pull out or roll on from a slow speed? If so, it's probably because you have two drivers using the car with different driving styles and the memory function is screwing things up.

To fix this, turn the car off, depress the throttle all the way til you hear the button click and then turn the ignition on (don't start the car). then take your foot off and depress it again a coupel of times. This should clear the memory and fix the problem.

Also, if you haven't removed the 605 relay yet you may want to do it. The allroad is way to light on the steering and the 605 relay is the servotronic option fitted as standard but optional in Europe. It takes 5 minutes to remove it and you'll be amazed at the difference in how the car steers and planted to the road it feels.

My wife pretty much drives the Allroad and I drive the S4 to work so that may be the problem with the car. I think the car is a little slow off the line and that may be due to the two drivers syndrome. I will try out the depression of the accelerator.
I took the 605 relay out in the first week. The steering felt like a caddilac to me. WAAAY too light. It is tons better without it in there. I heard that the European Allroads didnt have the 605 relay in the car in the first place. Makes sense, the Europeans usually have it right and we americans drives the ultra power steering mobiles!

Guys,

I have pretty much decided on getting the 2003 allroad and have been negotiating price( looks like $2.5k under sticker).

One of the sales guys has strongly suggested adding the "cold weather package(heated seats and ski bag)" to be essential for ultimate resale and if I did not include it, would need a much larger deposit because if I backed out it would be much harder for them to sell the vehicle. They would add this feature at invoice price.

My question is whether this position is a valid one. Are heated seats essential?I live in the suburbs North of NYC. I was just going to build a manual tranny allroad with the luxury package- which now includes the xenon lights, memory seats, multifunction steering wheel as well as the leather and sunroof.

TIA

Steve

Listen to what the salesman is telling you...

"Buy the package (i.e. more money for me) because the resale value will be higher (i.e. easier for you to sell and get your money back) BUT if you don't buy it (i.e. less money for me) then you'll have to give me a bigger deposit because it'll be harder for me to sell (i.e. honest, you'll be better off if you buy it but if I get stuck with it it'll be somehow harder for me to sell it)"

Doesn't make sense. Buy it if you need it. Don't buy it if you don't. If I lived in NY I'd buy it. Nothing to do with resale but everything to do with comfort. As an FYI though the ski bag comes as standard equipment - well it did on our 2001 model because we don't have heated seats (we live in Atlanta) and I certainly didn't order it.
