I am new to the Porsche brand, being an owner of a 996TT, and I am hooked. However, I also own other types of cars such as a Lexus LX470 and BMW 540, both of which will be replaced by the Cayenne(the Turbo, of course). My 996TT is my track car and ,believe it or not, my daily driver two-thirds of the time. The reason I drive it everyday is that it provides a thrill even puttering around town and I hope they can do that with the Cayenne and still tote my two kids! They are making that car so that we can buy Porsche for ALL our needs and, hopefully make enough money to fund their racing program(which is frightfully expensive)and their sports cars.

Ok, I have read ALL of the topics. What I have found (Sad but true):
1.Porsche needs to be air cooled, ??why to keep up tradition? Ever heard the rule -10F degrees = +%1 hp? You cannot make a bulletproof car utilizing air, maybe we should go back to the jetronic systems!!
2.Porsche should tickle only fanatics because it is a fanatic car company, bull****, from tractors to offroad, this car company is built around publicity and money. Not track or street record holding, although the fanatics will never admit it. Have you seen many Porsche racing ads(made by Porsche?)
3.The "pepper" or a coin worth everything on one side and nothing on the other(hope that made sense, if you didn't, re-read until you do) is nothing else but a money maker, or a company erroder/corroder.

In short name one Porsche car that you would mind owning if it was given to you free of charge? I have owned a 924, a 944, a 911 and soon will be purchasing a 914. I know about these cars and every one of these is a great one, in my opinion. 924? Best handling Porsche of ALL time, the new ones cant touch it, sure it was ugly, and underpowered, cheap and the steering wheel was in your groin, but it is a true "pagan" Porsche although made by VW. So if you really do not appreciate the Cayenne, then you probably would not like one sitting in your driveway, no no wait a minute its a joint with MB.
My dollar in cents.

Jmmtias and Mike in Chi I think hit the matter on the head. At first I was totally opposed myself on the idea of an SUV Porsche, being a Porsche owner of 4 different models over the past 12 years I was deeply offended. Like it or not as most of us were no born with the silver spoon we all had to work hard for our money and as we age and progress financially we are able to afford more... So the age bracket that traditionally could afford a brand new Porsche were over 30 not to mention over 35...
Well if you think about it the fact is that all of these people bar some exeptions have families etc and almost always the P-car is not the daily driver!
How many times have we heard...well got married have to sell the P-car to make room for the family!!!! Even my new bride hinted "we should look for a family car"... Of course I will not sell my baby.. but I will almost have to buy a bloody damn SUV... Actually I was looking at the audi all road....
What I;m trying to say is that Porsche rightfully so decided to capitalize on these facts... Why leave the market open for P-car owners to buy X-5's ML's and Grand Cherokees??? I bet if you look at this list you will find that 90% of all of us have a 2nd car for daily use or or hauling stuff
I myself think I will ditch my M3 for a Caynenne!
Just think the benefits:
Handling, brakes, room for stuff, towing capability to tow my baby to the DE events, my wife happy ( will sleep quieter <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> ) and she can drive too!
If Cayenne means that this is the only way for Porsche to make money and give us again a real 911 (not a 996) then so be it! I will buy one too!

i, for one am not fond of the current suv "fad". "suv" does not exist in my mind. you've got jeeps (the two door kind), you've got the g-wagen, and then there's the rovers (the 'land' kind). all the rest are poor imitations.

perhaps we should look at this in another light: at least we are getting a front engined water-cooled car. the possibilites include furthering the 928 legacy (944/968 too) and breaking out of the rear-wheeled, air-cooled mold like porsche tried to do with the 924/928.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see how people's attitudes have changed after they've been released for 6mos-1 yr. i bet the majority will have chnaged. stay tuned.

Hi All,
I have just been reading this trade with a good friend who is also a reporter for a motoring magazine.

Well, just put it this way - he cannot believe the barrage of objections amongst us. As he puts it, “you guys are talking up the Porsche SUV subconsciously - I bet all you little devils will own one within 2 years!”

Why?, because everyone hates something until they see it for real for the first time then they are smitten!

Modern households have 2 cars – a 4x4 for the family and daddy’s sports car. Porsche recognise that fact and that is LIFE.!

I am not a fan of the SUV and at this pt the arguement is mute. SO LETS SEE IF MY WIFE WILL WANT ONE? Now that would be a great test.

Porsche can't build an SUV and campaign at LeMans simultaneously?

Can you spell Cadillac??

Phil, When I was driving (911) cross (southern) country to Breckenridge last Winter, I was introduced to numerous such devices, esp in W OK & N TX. I was impressed that these babies can (& do!) cruise at 95 - 110 on the Interstate. No excitement, just throttle down, watch the horizon (from way up there), shoot the breeze. The new "cowboy cruisers"...

Anyway, this allowed me to a) determine if my cruise control worked well at over 100mph, & b) let big gaps open up, & then close them w/ alacrity (800 mi. interstate stints can get boring). I guess the "sport" that Cayenne owners may engage in, will be to continue such exercises once they turn off at the farm or trail.

My ONLY fear of the Cayenne is the thought of a "Soccer Mom" trading in the SUV/Minivan for one...

...my GOD!

After all, "gotta get the kids to practice on time, no matter who we run over in the process".

Just thought I'd add a "fun, maybe frightening" thought in there. No offense to the "Soccer Moms" of the world.

I like my Jeep Overland a lot! But the VW in pics looks better AND looks to have great towing/4wd. I still haven't seen the inside of the pepper mobile but the VW looks better! (I'll buy one or the other!

Guess I have a pretty good wife to be then, she HATES SUV's instead opting to buy herself a fully loaded F-250 extended cab, I asked her why a big truck and her reply was hilarious, "I like trucks, SUV's are just jacked up station wagons and besides where you decide you wanna borrow my truck I'll just borrow your car As a bonus we've both been playing Need for Speed - Porsche Unleashed on the PC and she now wants to find an old 356 to restore. The more I think of it though the Cayenne does make sense in a way, just about every p-car owner I know has a second car whether it's a daily driver, winter car, family car but none of them are second p-cars. My workhorse is an old Ford pickup with a big-block engine (modified of course) I keep it around for towing my trailer, hauling stuff for the house etc. but mainly because if I have to drive it rather than the porsche at least I can enjoy it's awesome (for a truck) acceleration, so I can certainly understand why some would like a fast SUV.

Hey guys, I was driving around and I saw three cayennes on the road one behind the other. all covered in black tape or something. Driving toward New york City. At first I thought i was a new turbo, but I realized it was too high off the ground. i was very surprised. They were reaaallly nice! I could still see the body even though it was covered. I was not for the cayenne like many other people here, but Man was I surprised at how nice it looked. the back looks really mean. anyway, I'm waiting for it to come out. We'll see what happens

Just read through this topic and one thing has struck me... over 90% of the posters identified are from the US, exactly the market the Cayanne is aimed at.
Alot has been written about brand and the possible negative knock-on effect this development will have. Surely it's obvious what the strategy is, or have I misread the signs?
Cap the SUV market, maintain brand loyalty for the second 'family' car with a beast that will thrash all at Paris-Dakar etc therefore giving the necessary credibility to the product re. justification etc... Then, and only then, back to business with a ball-breaking re-entry to GT world-class 'big grunts' and wipe the smile of the smug face of Audi!!!
Oh, maybe that was just a dream....
Ciao 4 now
Leslie

ps. Adrian is right. I lived for many years around Modena and can tell you that the only 'independent' italian maker, De Tomaso now operates out of no more than a shed and is reduced to a tuning yard! While the Bugatti factory at Campogalliano, six kilometres from my old house, (a future vision architectural statement if ever there was one) is currently used as a warehouse for cheap eastern european low-cost household imports!
