reversing camera

To complete the unanswered questions in this thread: The PIWIS is used to access the PCM2 control unit but only after a full search is performed (which takes 5 or so minutes - changes can't be made if the PCM is selected on its own without a full search first); then access the PCM2 MMI selection, then access the Equipment section. In that section is a selection called "Reversing Camera" and the PIWIS will set it as Installed or Not Installed. There's no special channel as someone mentioned above. The above is with a PIWIS1 on a 2008 model; doing this with a PIWIS2 is likely the same.

Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the trim pieces in the hatch around the window? It seems when I pul on them that they are going to break! Help! Installing reverse camera.

Guess what? You do not have to use a PIWIS to enable the reverse camera! I went to my local Porsche indy shop and they were able to enable my reverse camera. Initially, they tried and it didn't work. With their system they were able to see and enable the reverse camera function but the camera did not show on the screen. I already have my reverse camera installed and checked it with a tv that it does work and is connected correctly. They were about to let me go and the service tech said "wait a minute!" He said maybe if I activate the MOVIE option and also the REVERSE CAMERA it might work. Next thing you know VOILA! I have an enabled reverse camera and he did it without a PIWIS!

That's good to know, Kino. Any idea what system/tool they were using?

Not an indy, but I had mine done at West Side Porsche on I10. I think they charged an hour labor. Note that initially they said they couldn't do it, but I told them to keep trying and they got it. Great mod.

Zonnie, that looks like the right cable. Just make sure whatever camera you get that it has the right RCA cable to plug in (male or Female) or you may end up needing a male to male or female to female adapter.

Zonnie, that one will probably work just fine. If you are not replacing the OEM camera you will have to find a power source around the rear hatch. Some have gotten fancy and tapped into the reverse lights to power it only when in reverse. Also, if not replacing an OEM camera you will have to run the video cable all the way to the back of the PCM, and get the PCM coded for Video. I know the dealer can do this with PIWIS although most dealer techs aren't very sharp. Someone above said they got theirs coded with Autologic, but I'm not familiar with that program.
