That is what you call a SCAM.

Beware.

Funny,
let me guess if you email them you get an auto response saying he is in the military stationed overseas and if you wire money they will ship the car. When you get take your car to Carmax and get more than the asking price it is a SCAM.

Way too many of these out there.

I haven't had any contact with the erstwhile seller, so I know nothing. But, yeah, it's fishy as hell. My brother found it while nosing around. All my talk about buying a Cayenne has him looking now.

So, I sent a query to the listed owner through AutoTrader, and got this:

Subject: RE: AutoTrader.com Alert - Someone is interested in your 2005 Porsche Cayenne for sale on AutoTrader.com

Hello,

I appreciate your interest in my car, first of all I want to assure that there's nothing wrong with it ,exactly as you see it in the pics .
What can I tell you in a few words is that I am an individual seller, I am not a dealer and this is my first type of auction on internet. I have a clear title and it is on my name. The car that I have for sale is mine , it is personal property and I sell this car because I'm a deaf and I have the opportunity to do a surgery that could bring me back my hearing.

This is a smoke-free automobile.
There is no damage evident on this vehicle.
The engine on this vehicle is running properly.
This vehicle has no known defects.
The exterior of this vehicle is extra clean.
Extra clean interior. Absolutely no rips or abuse.
The tires on this vehicle are in very good condition.
The mileage represented on this vehicle is accurate
There are no signs of prior damage on this vehicle.
There are no noticeable dings on the exterior of this vehicle.
The transmission shifts smoothly.
All power equipment is functioning properly.

My asking price is $11,000.
Where are you located?
Here are some actual pics with the car. If you have any question feel free to ask.

Best wishes
Chris Kennedy
My reply{
Hi Chris,

Well, if that's a firm number for the car, then I am absolutely interested. I'm in Scranton, PA, so probably about four hours from you. However, if the car is as good as you say, then I'm more than willing to go down to pick it up. Just to let you know: based on the description the car is worth two or three times what you're asking for it.

I understand scrambling for medical expenses; nearly two years ago my son fell and broke his neck, he'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. It's bad enough trying to figure out how to get through, but there wa a problem with his insurance at first, so we also had to worry about (literally) millions in medical bills and tens of thousands in alterations to our house.

Everything is fine now, and I hope it works out for you as well.

Can you give me the town you live in, so I can estimate the drive? I don't need your address at this point.

Can I get the VIN, so I can run a CARFAX check?

I might ask someone I know to come by and take a look at the vehicle this weekend, but I couldn't pick it up until early next week. Is that okay?

Thanks for your time,

Shawn
So, is anyone there anyone in the Norther Virginia area who will volunteer to waste a couple hours on my behalf? Y'know, just in case...

Looks fie to me, assuming the Russian PPI goes well and there are no issues with the Nigerian finance paperwork.

Of course it's a scam, I'm just wondering how it works.

And the scam takes shape:
Hello again.

I would like to thank you for your interest in buying my car and also to clearly some things first of all.
I am located in Willmar, MN and i would like to know from the begining if you are really interested in purchase, so i can stop negotiating with potential buyers.
My final price is $11,000 with shipping/handling includend and it is not negotiable because the car is perfect condition.
The transaction will be closed only through a 3rd party and this way we will both be protected. My time is limited due to my job, so I decided to use the
Vehicle Purchase Protection Program offered by eBay Motors.
This service will offer you:
-Secure & safe payment metod provided by eBay Motors
-Inspection period for buyer (5 days for inspection with the car at your location)
-Shipping company is created by DAS ( Dependable Auto Shippers )
-The car will come with all documents (clear title, bills of sale, car's manual)
So if you agree with what i stated above and you have the funds, i am ready to explain to you all the details regarding the
payment method - inspection period - shipping process and all about this deal.

P.S. Here is the VIN WP1AC29P75LA91425

Looking forward to hearing from you
Awesome...

I notice that the car has morphed from a Turbo to just an S, as well as moving from Virginia to Minnesota. I told him I had a check from my credit union that would have to be signed by both parties, but that I'd happily fly to Minnesota. I also volunteered to get it inspected at a Porsche dealer in Minneapolis.

I asked him to check his schedule to see when we could do this deal; I have a feeling he's not going to have any time for me...

Yeah, I'm trying to think about my options. Has anyone seen the reverse Nigerians, where they get the Nigerians to wire them some money - usually a dollar or two - to confirm that the banking connection works? Maybe some variation on that...

Have him wire you a good faith amount of $2500 so you know he is real and tell him when you get it you will in turn wire him that amount + the cost of the car.

I would offer him an extra $5k just for good measure. Any way to check the registered owner, given a VIN?

What's he going to say when you arrange the PPI at a real dealer?

Watch this deal turn out to be legit.

No way it's legit. He pinged back saying that he travelled so much that he couldn't meet me in person, that's why he was using a broker. I also notice that his emails are always sent around 2:30 AM, which means he's probably in a time zone near GMT.

I'm debating my next move, but I think I'll let him sit for a couple days and ping back apologizing about some made-up crisis. He says he has other buyers on the line now, so I'll offer him extra money to dump any other buyer he has on the hook.

The kid's probably 14. Maybe he's pulling the VIN off his dad's...

Tell him price is no object, since you are soon to take part in 10% of a $20M windfall from a Nigerian Prince seeking an American investor to help him hide funds. Ask him if he'll accept your assignment of that interest, in exchange for the car.
