Strange, my auto lights is factory, shows on the option list. I have a different switch, the auto notch is a picture of a tunnel entrance with a headlight beam shining into it from the left. I have a 2005.

Must have been a early switch Then again maybe I am confusing my touareg with the cayenne...

I do NOT have the auto dim rear view mirror I am sorry to say. I think the light sensor is either in the auto rain sensor behind the rear view mirror, or looks like there is a light sensor on the front center of my dash up against the windshield.

I have noticed that my radio (pcm) changes brightness depending on whether it is dark or light.

There is definitely a sensor somewhere.

Also the red background lighting on the switch looks good. It matches the needles on the speedo and tach, and the red light on the flasher button when the lights are on.

I noticed the first one you quoted (ie. the higher priced one) is shown as being compatible with the Touareg. The second one is shown as being compatible with the VW cars and the Tiguan. I was going to call ECS later to find out if the latter may be just as compatible.

That's a nice looking one with blingy chrome. The compatibility chart shows that it is not compatible with my '06 but who knows?

I think everyone should report back to this thread with their results the way carreracup has.

Agreed, and with the specific part they purchased.

virkdoc, did you order the ebay part? If not, I may make a $20 gamble.

Spoke to ECS today. The salesman told me the switch that carreracup got (for $80) was considered OEM while the less expensive one was considered aftermarket. That is just an FYI. They do not accept returns if the part has been installed though (not sure if the switch comes shrink wrapped or something).

All I know is the one I got works .. and I am very happy about it. The quality is very good. I am not sure why porsche did not just give me the better auto switch, so I could have auto to begin with. I think the non OEM one from ECS would also work fine.

I ordered 25 dollar one from ebay as well ... it is OEM VW part with the part chrome ****. I thought the chrome may match my brushed aluminum, but in the end decided to go with the ECS one. When I get the Ebay one, I can test it and sell to someone if they want it.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that the ebay ones, even though they are oem VW are made in China. I looked up the part numbers and that is what I discovered .. think that is what the CN means. My ECS VW/Audi one is made in spain, just like the one I removed.

Also I just called Sunset Porsche, and they have two switches for the Cayenne. Neither one says auto in the description. One says DRL lights , fog lights etc ... but not auto. So if anyone gets the actual Porsche one ... please share the part number for everyone. I am happy with mine and will not be changing it.
