Looks like my tubes are leaking.

I know they now use the metal ones so they don't need to drop the engine.
Any idea on cost for that job, and if the tubes are available?

How can you tell that you tubes are leaking? Did you have a massive leak, or did the low coolant light come on?

There is a TSB on renntech from 2008 that indicates that the engine no longer needs to be taken out, so cost may be less if you are out of warranty.

Brought it in this morning, and that's definately what appears to be from where the coolant is pouring out.

Any clue on total cost, parts + labor?

You don't need to pull the engine, the updated pipes are multi-piece to avoid engine removal.

They quoted 1900.00 today. Does that sound fair?

Depends on what is being replaced and the labor rate. I think that is too low, but check with the written estimate you got from the shop.
Usually the breather hose breaks, the injectors should be tested and cleaned and there a few other parts needed.

Thanks. What's a breather hose? Is that something we can access with the intake off?

Not to be too sarcastic here but the breather hose may be one of two parts - one with a Porsche Part Number - the other without - the one without is located at the checkout counter of the service center - it's used to revive customers after the invoice for payment slides across the desk........Take it away LTC.....

Ok, now that I've gotten a chance to check my invoices. I did the tubes at my local shop where I've been doing brakes, oil changes, tire balancing, etc. So, if $1900 was quoted by the dealer it does look low, because I paid $1800 for 11 hrs at $75/hr. Where are you located?

while they are doing the coolant tubes, have them check the coolant distribution pipe. I had my coolant tubes replaced last January, and then started to get another leak this past December. It turned out to be the coolant distribution pipe, which is right before the coolant tubes that they always have to replace due to the poor design. The dealer that replaced teh coolant distribution pipe for me, said whenever they replace the coolant tubes they check the coolant distr. pipe also, as they have been seeing many of those going bad at the same time. adn the distribution pipe is only a $180 part but you have all of the labor to get access to that area and if you are in there to replace the tubes you might as well replace the distr. pipe.

The local dealer said the other shop should have noted that it was going bad when they did the tubes, but for some reason they did not and of course Porsche won;t eat the cost of their poor design on the tubes or the dist. pipe. Evn though the dealers are saying it is becoming another item that was poorly designed and failing too early. The coolant dist. pipe is a cast iron piece that starts corroding and leaking due to the dissimilar metals and plastics that are connected to it, according to the dealer.
so, make sure they check that piece out also, or just have them replace it, or you will pay apprx, $2000 or more twice to get to the same area.
also report both the tubes and the pipe to the NHTSA,for their tracking purposes of defective car parts. ( the list is growing for Porsche)
and your $1900 quote is great. normally more closer to $2500-3000.

Are there any special tools required to do this job? Can this be done at home over a long weekend?
