Default Nav DVD (PCM update too) price

When I dropped the Pepper "S" off at the dealer yesterday for a few minor issues I asked about the Nav/PCM update and the price. To my surprise the rep said I could do a lot better price wise than the dealer would have to charge for the PCM update. He wouldn't name names but I figured he was talking about Sunset. When I asked ballpark price he said under $200!

Well, needless to say I called Sunset today but unfortunately the price has gone up a little, it is now $226.76. Per Sunset there is very little markup on this part to begin with.

Below is the link to the info on Porsche USA's web site and per that site and my dealer the DVD you get includes both a PCM update and the Nav update (08/2007). There is some info on Renntech.org TSB's re: what level of PCM you have to be at to perform the PCM update so I would suggest spending the $25 on membership at RennTech.org for access to the TSB's, well worth it.

P/N for the update is 955.044.900.08 (again Nav date 08/2007) ** I don't know where this p/n came from, Sunset, research, don't know, it's been too long but this number has a Nav DVD with a date of 08.2005 which isn't much better than the one it would have replaced (in my car). Called Sunset, requested the latest Nav update per Porsche's web site which is 955.044..902.61 See post # 14.

Link to Porsche Nav Update

** This is NOT for those with the CD biased Nav system, DVD systems only.

BTW, my Nav DVD in my '06 is dated 04/2005. I don't have the Pepper back yet, the dealer was done with what they could complete (they need some parts, as expected) but I'll pick it up tomorrow.

Sunset does not have the update DVD in stock either but they didn't indicate it would have to come from Germany so I expect it shouldn't be more than a week to 10 days for that. I did tell them to expect more orders from the RL group...

Sorry, but I am a little confused. I have a 2005 Boxster with naviation, but how will I know if it is a CD or DVD? Or is that stupid question?

Yes, I am stupid, but I have one of the few "Naviation" systems.

Unless there's something special about the Boxsters (there very well may be) I would just pop out the disk in your Nav system, it should say DVD somewhere? On our Cayenne's the CD biased systems require 3 CD's which you pop in / out 1 at a time but the DVD system is a single DVD that is left in the Nav unit.

I would look on Porsche USA's website (I linked to it above) but move over to the Boxster area and look under the Teequipment area for any Nav DVD updates.

Good luck.

Update: Just did a quick pruse of the Porsche USA site, looks like the 986's got a 2 disk CD biased system and there's no mention of a Nav update. Sounds like you're in the same boat as our '03 - '04 Cayenne owner's. Sorry.

But don't take my word for it, call someone like Sunset who can confirm the info. I'm just another dummy with a keyboard.

All '05 987s should be DVD based for their PCM.

I didn't know when they switched from 986 to 987's. Just assumed the 987's were Cayman's, guess I should have asked.

Yes Bill.. CD based you use the cd drive on the pcm itself.. if it's DVD based, it's a separate unit..

OK, now it makes sense. I just assumed it was a separate unit Like the DVD unit under the seat but it used CD's. Learn something new every day.

DId anyone actually perform the Cayenne update yet. I understand that loading new maps is easy but this setup includes an update to software?

I thought only the dealer, with the high-priced equipment, could perform any software updates.

Is this really plug-and-play?

Thanks.

I just called Sunset to find out what the status of my update DVD order was. Turns out that even though I had verified they had my address and my current credit card info when I talked to them (what I considered the order process) they thought I was still going to get back to them to actually place the order so my order was never processed, it was still in quote status.

They will now expedite my DVD update order.

The 955.044.900.08 p/n delivered me a PCM update DVD but the Nav update DVD that came with it is dated 08.2005, not much better than the 04.2005 DVD (p/n 997.642.257.02) that's in my system now.

One more thing, the PCM update s/w disc comes with a insert that basically says "not for end customer use, to be used by service techs only" something to that affect.

Called Sunset, they'll send UPS to pick this pkg. up and have ordered the latest Nav DVD Update per Porsche's web site 955.044.902.61

I may start another thread but why are some Nav DVD p/n's 955, some 996 and some 997 p/n's? Are they interchangeable? (I know what the 955, 996 and 997 stand for).

Thanks for the info Bill. If your update(s) work as advertised, Sunset is going to have some more business.
