Ok, so I have been doing ALOT of reading from the archives and i can't figure out for the life of me why I "need" the Teq towing system.

I have read quite a bit that the pricing of the Teq system is helped by the "control unit". Not without PASM on my Cayenne why in the world would I need it? I just can't get over the price difference.

The Curt Hitch is $160 shipped.
Ball Mount and Ball $40
Lights wiring kit $20
Brake Controller $100
A weekend in the garage of my labor $0
Total cost ~$320

Am I missing something here?

OFF TO MAKE A MARTINI...MY HEAD IS HURTING!!!
Where can I buy this Brake Controller?

How do I know?
I gave it to him, along with the 4pin harness/connector, out of "the vehicle that I don't talk about"......you know the one that goes "!" and then it got real dark.

And since you're probably going to ask this question:

Answer: Installing Trailer Brakes:
QTY: PARTS:
2 000979228
1 1J0972782
1 Brake Controller

Get the first two items from a Volkswagon Dealer; Porsche
does not carry the connectors or wires. You can get
the controller from your local trailer store or online from
ETRAILER.COM.

First, remove under tray panel under dash on driver side.
Find 20 torx in center of panel and remove it.

Drop panel down and look for a 4 prong square connector on left side of dash, hanging off of main harness. Might be wrapped with grey foam.

Install the ends of the wires 0009799228
in the 4 slots in the connector, part number 1J0972782.

CONNECTOR IN CAR: WIRE COLOR:

TERMINAL 1: BROWN
TERMINAL 2: RED Check fuse box right
F19, make sure it has a 30 AMP fuse in it.
TERMINAL 3: BLACK/ RED
TERMINAL 4: BLUE

WIRING TO CONTROLLER:

TERMINAL 1: GROUND
TERMINAL 2: B+ POWER ALL THE TIME
TERMINAL 3: STOP LIGHT
TERMINAL 4: TRAILER BRAKE

Thank you! Like I said I got the Curt, whose towing weight limit I don't even know anyway.... But anyway it is better than $1800 with NO electric brake controller....

FYI....The Curt is 6000 pounds which is why I didn't go with it after all. I needed at LEAST 7000 pounds to tow my encolosed car trailer and car to the track!

FYI....My final total cost was about $900 (with me doing the install myself) and the future dinner I owe Lewis!

That $900 was the bar bill, correct?

How long did the install take. Did you get the hitch from Sunset. Which parts are included. Did you have to trim any plastic on the fascia to install. Can you send a copy of the TSB for the install?
Thanks for your help.

Hey Jim, if you can wade through most of my threads on this (Lewis just posted 3 of the many above) you will quickly find out what ordeal was like.

I paid roughly $850 for the towing system which included EVERYTHING....hitch, ball revciever, ball, pollack wiring harness, towing control unit.

The hitch can be done inside an hour. But it is the towing control unit that will take FOREVER since there is NO easy way to get it mounted without following the TSB. But guess what? The TSB says remove "x" panel and then next to it says "see workshop manual number 'xxxx' " So thankfully I get the help of another forum member that emails me the ENTIRE interior panel removal workshop manual. But to remove the one panel where the towing unit has to be installed behind, you have to remove an ajoining panel.....but to remove that adjoining panel, you have to remove its' adjoining panel, but to remove.......... see the trend?

I would say the install took me a couple hours a days for about 3-4 days and a 1/5 of Grey Goose

But after all is said and done, I couldn't be happier. I am able to utilize the ENTIRE weight rating of the Cayenne as opposed to if I went with the Curt Hitch or a similar aftermarket one. I needed the full towing weight totow my car to the track, etc!

Once the install was done I crossing my fingers I wouldn't have the dreaded light issues that everybody else seemed tohave. And just when I thought I did, another member chimed in and asked if I had the dealer program the towing control unit? Sure enough my dealer did it for gratis and told me that it was programmed to RoW towing which will affect the lighting. He changed it to USA and I went and hooked up my brand new PACE trailer and it worked PERFECTLY!!!

Do a search for my threads in this forum (Cayenne) and you find find more that highlight this experience

If after that you would like the any info I have to help you with the install just shoot me an email (or PM me your email address) and I will be happy to send over everything I have.

Oops, forgot to answer your question. Yes I did have to trim the rear bumper. Good news is that my $30 black and decker jig saw with a fine blade cut it like it was warm butter! There is a template already stamped into the bumper so you know exactly where to cut. Actually there are 3 templates and the TSB shows exactly which one is the US template.

My CT / trailer just brought another 30 big bags of peat moss home from Lowes. No trailer / lighting issues.

Than's Frank, named by my friend, as: Franken Mower. The Snapper gives an outstanding cut.
