YES - I LUV the Exclamation point - Remember back in the day when it was banned? Oh Exclamation point - companion of all that is Porsche towing...

Actually - it is kind of funny how I have gotten used to it now... Was in Steamboat and towing with a Navagator and kept looking for the "!"....

My immediate towing need is I have to pick up a 944 Cup car on an open trailer.

For next season I am either going to use my Cayenne to tow the car in a 20 ft. enclosed trailer or I may spring for a new tow vehicle. It depends on how well the Cayenne actually performs as a tow vehicle.

Will I need to add the brake controller or is the factory set-up good to go?

I appreciate everyones' help.

Mechanically, open trailer (aluminum Trailex?) and 944 Cup car should be no problem.
Since the 944 Cup has the engine in the wrong place (front) , be sure to watch tongue weight; you may want to purchase a Sherline tongue weight scale, and then you can mark where to park the car on the trailer.

Another 20' enclosed
OK, usual questions......how many lights? Incandescent or LED?
Have you checked out 'skl' and his setup/issues?
Have you checked out the thread from Toby regarding mirror extensions?
Do you have any towing experience?

Diesel tow vehicle would be my vote.

Mechanically at 6K (properly balanced), it's just fine, especially with PASM.

The factory 1D6 option has NOTHING to do with brakes! 7 pin Pollack/lights ONLY!
You will find a 4 pin connector under the dash; this is for your (electric) brake controller. I've posted parts, instructions, etc previously and LVDell actually has my old setup (controller and harness)......of course he has also seen an increase in his Grey Goose intake....coincidence? I think not.
JFScheck (he also of the "!" Cayenne LED club......even though I warned him.....) has posted pics as well.

Regarding the electrical connection:
0
The manual shows the connection panel adjacent to the hitch as having a flip cover. Mine is a flat panel fixed by 4 screws on the four corners.

When I unscrewed it, I found the wiring harness plug attached to this flat panel. I am unsure how I am supposed to expose the harness connection? Is this panel simply a cover for the plug? If so, then how would I disconnect it?

My Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and my Hummer H2 both had flip covers for the connection. It appears either this Cayenne has not had the flip cover installed or this flat panel is a cover for the connection and I somehow need to disconnect it to expose the plug.

I apologize for what is probably a stupid question but I have to pick up my new 944 Cup car and trailer this weekend.

Thanks again!

Porsche (and VW) in their infinate wisdom didn't include the Pollak connector you need. Something about different countries use different connectors....

You can get the part from any VW dealer and most Porsche dealers for around $40.

I think Sunset charged me about $20 for BOTH the 7 pin and 4 pin Pollack. Give them a call.

U-Haul has them too and cheaper than dealer. Yes, I know because ... Yes, I hauled college boy #1 to school with a U-Haul trailer behind my S because he had lost the use of his car for a semester. GPA <. FUN.. and yes, I got lots of "what is that" looks hauling that thing at 75-80.

Thanks very much, guys.

I went to Princeton Porsche and, of course, they are sold out.

It boggles the mind to think that my $68,000 Cayenne is not equipped with a $10 socket...

Makes me wish I hung onto my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

Try the VW dealer, they usually have them.

Any local trailer or hitch company would have the Pollak connector- had mine installed at a hitch dealer in a couple minutes- they then had a tester to make sure all the connections were functional. Couldn't have cost more than $10-15. The last Cayenne I saw at the dealer also still had the flat plate- can't believe it doesn't come with the connector as well. Wonder about the Q7??

Wow, tough crowd here tonight.

What happened to the good old days, when you could feel the love in the forum, laughing about keyfob range measured in inches (less when it was raining), rear hatches opening by themselves, rusting stainless steel trim falling off at highways speeds, fogging headlights, wiper blades that worked well for about a week.....you remember, the good old days.

He has a valid point.
You pay $850 (IIRC that is the window sticker option price) for 1D6/1D8 towing package and you STILL get a flat plate, covering no connector?
They really should at least provide the 7pin Pollack on vehicles ordered from the factory with 1D6.......personally, I'm not buying another one until they do.
