How much to remove engine on 955 Turbo?
So per this post (https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...ggestions.html), my Cayenne is going to need the engine out to repair a burned exhaust valve.
For those of you that have paid for engine out repairs (for mounts, or turbos, or other work), how much was the engine removal and reinstallation?
Right now, I've had one mechanic quote me $4500 for the R & R only. That seems steep, but maybe not. And I'm assuming once the engine is out, pulling the heads and doing all the gaskets and hoses is probably another $2k in labor, plus any parts and consumables...
Appreciate your thoughts.

I got to thinking about it: My car would need to sit on a lift for some period (at least a week) while the heads were being reconditioned. Depending on the shop, that could also factor into the cost.
It's not a "simple" drop, swap, and replace.

It's times like this I wish I owned that dream ranch with the big barn/workshop with a lift....

it wasn't a quote, it was the price I paid. i had engine r&r, new motor mounts, valve cover r&r along with a bunch of new hoses. $3195 all in. he's porsche and vw specialist. even calls after a month to make sure all is good.

Also factor into the cost of engine R&R - evacuation of the HVAC, replacement of the receiver/dryer and new R134 when reassembled, and also a complete 4 wheel alignment. bleeding/flush of the brakes, coolant refill.

It's feeling like its the end of (my) road for this Cayenne. It's a well-maintained car in otherwise good shape, but I'd already had the itch to buy something newer, so this tips the balance towards getting rid of the car. I'm likely to list it on Rennlist and Craigslist for sale as-is. The engine (which otherwise appears fine) only has 65k miles and the car runs/drives on the remaining 7 cylinders (I unplugged the #8 fuel injector). It'd make an awesome platform for a rebuild or off-road conversion for someone that has a lift and some time. If interested, PM me.

Wanna buy a used Cayenne? That's a great price. Wish I was seeing prices like that here. BTW, I think that what your mechanic charged is fair for someone that knows what they're doing. 40 hours for an engine R&R seems about double what it should be.

Brief spec on the Cayenne? 65k total on vehicle? It can get expensive... removing the engine is only a small part. There are lots of gaskets need and the 75% of the engine needs to be broken down to get the heads off. At that point Half assing the heads on a low mileage engine probably not wise for recoup/resale. I've been wanting to do an overlander build/flip and your in Houston, I'm in Austin....

We should talk. It's a 2006 CTT. Black with caramel leather (not sure the Porsche name) interior. I know it's not worth much as is. Would love to see it reborn.
I bought it with 27k miles as a CPO from Porsche of Albuquerque ~2013. Believe it's been a NM/TX car its entire life -- need to look at CarFax to confirm.
Plusses:
~65k miles -- Ran great until it didn't
Softronic tune
Well maintained -- I have books and records/receipts
- New water pump, serp belt, pulleys, coolant tank, coils, plugs, valve cover gaskets, AC compressor, and more
- Recent upper and lower front control arms
- Recent brake pads (350/330 steel setup)
Coolant pipes done and metal tees and new hoses
Has 20" Technos that were recently refinished and 1 year old tires (less than 5k miles -- probably only 2 or 3k).
Android HU swap is 1 year old -- runs PX6 chipset; Has bluetooth phone, TPMS and backup camera
Synthetic oil changes yearly (~5k miles)
Current TX registration (just re-upped)
Weaknesses:
- Burned exhaust valve on #8. Car runs/drives, but needs a top end rebuild. Cylinders looked good otherwise.
- Paint on the roof is tired/chalky. Might be able to be buffed out. Don't know.
- Front bumper cover has a crack in it -- it spontaneously cracked, not sure why, TX heat maybe
- Scratches (from kid's bikes) on rear bumper cover
- Wear on drivers seat cushion
- Sagging headliner has been pinned up in rear
- Sunroof was janky the last time I tried it -- opened and immediately closed. Haven't bothered to investigate as I don't ever use it.
- Hazy headlights -- need a good sand/polish
- Some mildew in lower edge of right rear tail light -- looks darker along bottom edge. I've since sealed our the water that was getting in, but did not spend time cleaning our the mildew
I'll snap some pictures and post.
