$1000 for plugs?
I'm in the market for a Boxster, yesterday I was talking to a fellow who told me he had taken his in to the dealer for, oil change, plugs and air filter, cost $1K. The car had 78K mi and has been taken care of. Do you think this is normal, or did they do a major service? I have read the post on changing your own oil, didn't seem too hard. Seems I've heard that you have to drop the eng to change plugs, is that correct?

That sounds excessive. I would think he had more done than he knew. Plugs are accessible but you do need to remove the rear tires if not on a lift. Guess you could crawl in but not worth the trouble. Even at a dealer rate it should have been under 300, not that I would ever give someone that to change the oil and plugs.

Must have been something else. All of the services you describe take less than an hour to do. Total. Also, the only thing you need to drop the engine for is to replace the clutch components or fix the rear main seal. Everything else is accesible either from the top of the engine bay or from the rear of the cabin (behind the removable firewall panel).

Yea sounds right to me, seemed like way too much. He was very pissed at the dealer. I'll probably have to use the same dealer for a PPI. Just how much can a guy do if he is reasonably handy? Seems like most maintance, checks could be done. How bout things like belts and sparkplug wires? Do these engines have the individual coils at each plug?

For the plugs, remove the rear wheels and they can be reached.

There seems to be two distinct prices for Boxster services....about 600 Euro and about 1200 Euro.
The 60,000 Km service is a 600 Euro job and the 80,000 km is a 1200 Euro job.
I don't think the individual coils need to be changed that frequesntly but a friend got hit for a full set on his last service and that made it expensive.

Magic food for the Porsche elves/gnomes
It costs a lot of money to keep the magic Porsche elves/gnomes in stock for food, so that they can get into the sealed engine compartment, and do their magic.
