Default autox tires and size

Hi RL'ers

Wouldn't you know it, I'm starting the weekend long PCA Drivers Education School tomorrow night and got an unfixable flat in one of my rear tires tonight. I'll put my street wheels and tires (S-03's) back on for the school, but am in a quandry for the track tires which are MSPC's. I will be doing almost exlusively autox's for a while and eventually TT's. I understand the MSPC's are not great for autox because of the time it takes them to heat up, so I hesitate to buy two more rears at this stage even though the fronts are still in OK condition.

I've been searching through the forums and identified the tires most recomended for autox, but it seems, very few come in my particular tire size which is 225/40/18 fronts and 285/30/18 rears.

I had basically settled on getting the Toyo RA-1's since I will be driving back and forth to events, but they apparently don't come in my size. Other considerations were the Kumho Victoracer V700, the V710s or possibly V700s, but again, don't appear to come in my size.

For what I want them for and in my size, are the Hoosier A6's my only option? All thoughts and opinions appreciated.

If you're running 8" and 11" rims, these Kumho 710s will be perfect:

245/35R18
285/30R18

If you want something more streetable/rainworthy you can use Yokohama Advan AD07s:

rim range sec. tread dia r/mile
--------- ---- ------ --- ------
225/40 ZR18 88W SL 10/32" 24 lbs. 7.5-9" 9.1" 8.7" 25" 829
295/30 ZR18 94W SL 10/32" 29 lbs. 10-11" 11.5" 11.5" 25.1" 828

Thanks Joe. I'm running 8x18's front and 10x18 rears. I completely spaced out on the 710 sizes. Looks like they'll be perfect.

While they are an unknown quantity as far as AX, BFG has a new gForce R1 that also comes in appropriate 18" sizes.

FTR, I actually purchase a set of four 245/35 710's for my Cayman S (8f and 9r x 18), but my tire guys could not get them on seat right on the 8" fronts. I know others are running this tire, but they said they had 3 guys wrestling with it, could not get it to work. These fellows are THE track tire guys in my city, and I trust that they just could not get it done.

In any event, I ordered up a set of the new R1's (245/40 and 265/35). They are mounted up and ready to rock at this weekends AX.

They look pretty much like a 710 or a Hoosier, and what little I can find on line suggests they have are on the same level stick-wise, but supposedly last longer.

We will see....I hate being a tire guinea pig, but the 710's did not work, the Hoosiers wear too quickly for my pocket book, and the other options (Nittos and Toyos) seem to be more of a track tire than AX.

I won the San Francisco SCCA regional ASP championship for 2006 on
those Kumhos I recommended, on stock Porsche 8x18 and 11x18 wheels.
I had the option of lighter wider (9.5x18 and 12x18) wheels with
Hoosiers, but didn't like them as much.
I wish Michelin made a dedicated autocross version of the MPSC.

Just bought new tires today......choked on the price, but that's not important now....The good news is there's no longer an internal debate over what to get and
since I can't drive the car anywhere near it's potential, it all becomes moot.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for being the test rodent!

Please report back on those R1s. I'm anxious to see how they perform.
