Considering selling the 997 Turbo for 964 Turbo. Am I nuts?
I have owned 2 930's, a 996 GT2, a 996 TT, and now have a 997 TT. I miss the rawness of my modified 930 but want something just a little less crude than that. I have an immaculate 17k mile 997TT and while I do love it I find it a little dull. I should say that by dull I mean that it drives like any new fast car in that all the controls are light and it does everything asked of it without biting back.
Am I nuts to go this route? I know the 964 Turbo will be far slower but speed isn't everything and I have other cars for pure speed.

The 964T will be less refined, no computer safely nannies and a much better long term investment as well, if that matters.
As for slower, maybe a bit. But as the old saying goes, it's far more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow. This may be while you find the 997TT a bit dull.
I say go for it. If you find you don't like it, you can sell the 964T for at least what you paid (or maybe even more) and get another 997TT, as the 997TTs are not rare cars at all.
Good dilemma to have

I have considered the 993TT but I am not sure about the AWD. Oddly enough, I most enjoyed my 996TT which I set up perfectly for my tastes but I wasn't the biggest fan of the body and interior and the electronics (PASM). I like cars with no assist, no nannys, no help.
With that said I am having trouble letting go of my 997TT as low mileage ones like mine are becoming rarer and rarer. Problem is my house only has a 2 car garage so no room. Feel like I have been playing 911 Turbo roulette for the last decade or so trying to find the car to end all cars. I think the better choice is buy the 964T and sell my house for one with a larger garage!

A 993TT is easy to RWD and convert back. Many threads on 993 RWD conversion here. FD Motorsports have a RWD conversion brace that you need to buy when converting. Plenty of threads on it.
That being said 99% of my drives have been in a RWD 3TT so I don't know anything else. I think you will miss the power with a 965 3.3L. Learning curve on a CIS is more that a 3TT engine. A 965 3.6L would be a much harder decision.

I had my big share of CIS engines and they are fun if you know how to tune and work on them yourself. If not, it can get costly. As for air cooled, the 993TT stepped up the level for reliability and ECU controlled.

We take for granted things that are so nice and easy, that we start to dream about crazy things. Its a phase in life, I guarantee you, you will be back in a 997 TT.

If you want to do it, then you should do it. Life's too short not to do the stuff you want and can afford to do. I find my 997 Turbo deliciously boring too. And I LOVE IT TO DEATH and would never want to go back to an older 911 with A/C that sucks again. NEVER. But that's just me. I bought my car for it's looks, and the A/C after having a 96 911 C4S for 12 years and an 88 911 Carrera for 5 years - both with terrible A/C. I sweated all summer long.
Nope, I could never, ever go back. LOVE the A/C and the interior so much more than the older cars. I do love all the cars, any 911 variant, but great working A/C trumps everything for me. Just sayin.

Let me know if you do end up deciding to sell the 997TT.

I've done the P-car switch-a-roo thing a number of times now, all in search of the right combination of good form and function and enough drama to feel some excitement. I keep finding that for a while in the new car it's great, and then I start missing the old one. In particular I miss my the 08 TT cab I had for its versatility as a DD. In reality there is nothing that comes close to it. Is it the perfect driver? No. Does it have a linear NA power curve? No way. Does it sound like a Dyson? Well yes. But it does most things 90% very very well.
As for a 964 TT you are no doubt heading into the territory of the older car and all the ups and downs they bring with them. I picked up my 98 C2S in Feb and love it but numerous times had to jump start it as the new battery is dead. It's got a drain from the OEM CD player. It's got little quirks and quarks and although I like driving it I wonder with how busy I am in life do I really have time for it? Back to the 997 TT. It starts, runs, never lets you down, is fun to drive especially with the top down, looks super pretty, has a nice relatively simple full leather interior, great 12 months of the year etc...
So to the OP, my thoughts are to go and pick up a 964 T, preferably without selling your 997. I don't know if that's possible but if you can do it you may find that after a while you are not driving the 997 and want to sell it or you'll sell the 964. Because there is a good chance that like many on this Forum (some of you are now on your 3rd 997 TT) that you'll be back in the market for a 997.
Good luck on your hunt. In the mean time I'll continue my hunt for a low mileage 997 TT cab, PCCB, MT...

So your 997 Turbo is dull and you want a 964 Turbo. I guess by "dull" you mean your 997 Turbo just runs fine with minimal servicing and can go probably hundreds of thousands of miles before any internal engine work need be done?

Amigo,
I'm here to help you through this!!! I'm considered an SME.
There are three good reasons to go to a 964 and one really, really bad one. Using the "3 Good--1 Bad Rule" is how I make every single decision in my life... As someone mentioned before...life is short... do what feels right...and live life, but if you hit "BAD"...stop and regroup.
As you go forward, remember to use the "3 Good--1 Bad Rule"...
Hope this helps...JB
For Example:
One: (Good)
Two: (Good)
Three: (Good)
Four: (REALLY BAD) STOP, STOP, STOP!!!
