997 tt rattling noise at cold start-up: problem resolved

For anybody doing their own changes, you may have noticed that this small o-ring often isn't included with a new oil filter. Feel free to pay about $8 for the small o-ring from one of our common parts suppliers, or just buy it direct from China for a few pennies: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10pc...837565867.html. You want 2mm thickness by 10mm ID. 72 cents for ten of 'em.

I think I will take the 1.42 route from Ali Express.
Thanks!

I just got my oil changed. Is it possible to pull the oil filter without making a mess and replace that, just in case my shop didn't? Or just wait until my next oil change (9mo+)?

If no rattle, wait. If you are getting the rattle, just put plenty of shop towels around the oil filter and yank it. I have never done it with a full load of oil, but my guess is it won't be any worse.

I can't wait for the little white envelope with Chinese characters all over it - - seems like I get a couple a month these days. Not quite as good or fast as Brown Santa or Fed Ex, but I love me some cheap goods direct from China. Good post. Here's to no more Mezger rattle!

Warning! The use of ORING material made of Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR, Buna-N, and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber will fail in this application. The high heat and low strength will cause the oring to fail in chunks. I have seen it with the 996Turbo. The factory oring is Viton "F" high temp/high strength. And they cost 5 to 8 times the cost of Buna-Nitrile orings. The chunks will lodge in your Variocam and turbochargers. I have seen the black bits and chunks in turbocharger thrust bearing pockets (is like a trap to catch foreign material).
Spend the monies on Viton "F" or pay Porsche the $8.00

In the land of "Porsche tax" for parts, I haven't found it significant enough to spend time to find an OE supplier in order to spend $1 or $2 vs. the $6.02 (from Sonnen) for a part that gets changed once a year. YMMV.

Thank you as well. The ones on there way from china will be relegated to my bin of nuts, bolts and washers.
I have no problem paying for items that are made for a certain purpose. I had no idea about the potential issues surrounding these fittings. That is why advice and experience from you guys is so valuable!
Without forums like this I would be lost sometimes.

I haven't been able to find a cheap supply of 2x10mm F Viton o-rings (and I really tried). The best I could come up with was A Viton that is not as resilient. I did find a Chinese source that claimed to have them, but they were green and although you can make different material o-rings in pretty much any color, it is very unlikely that Viton o-rings would be made in the color green. I think the reason they are not included with the oil filter is because they are much more expensive than a regular o-ring.
