997 tt rattling noise at cold start-up: problem resolved

Do you have a Typo>>5W30.. You will shorten the life of your engine with the 30W... We are trying at all costs to prevent the 40W to sheer into a 30W..
If this is what you have in your engine>>drain it and refill.
FYI your 3K VNT turbochargers HATE thin oils. You will TRASH the thrust washers and thrust bearing stack in short order! You lose the oil film which causes the brass thrust bearing failure (our turbochargers already have an issue with this)
Happy Fourth...

Thanks for this thread guys. I had a major panzer racket at startup with my Mezger. Ran multiple oils over multiple changes. I personally prefer Amsoil's European classic, 5w-30. Still had the rattle at start. Changed the small o ring, which upon inspection, was compromised with a chunk gouged out. Problem solved. As usual, the forum provides the answers I seek.
Happy 4th to all of us here in the colonies. God bless America! ?? ?? ??

Edit: Speak of the devil, he confirmed my research as I was writing my post!

What's too thick? I run 20W-50 in my air cooled. Too much?

What kind of issues can you get running 5W30? I ask because the PO of my car apparently used 5W30, this is what I wrote down in my notes back when I bought the car, but I am not sure if that is also a typo/error. Just curious...

With my “daily” really a weekend 997TT I run Motul 5-40W and now I’ll go up to Mobil’s 5-50W just for that added “protection” I guess. TBH I just want it to run a little quieter is all.

I think all people are saying is that once you’re up to operating temps or especially above after multiple high speed prolonged pulls or track time it thins out and drops down say to 20W instead of 30W... hence why they’re all freaking out over use of 30W. Makes sense to me I guess.

Jeebus, take oil samples and send them to Blackstone. Post your results..
Skwerl.. Motul 5W50 runs thin vs Mobil1 and Redline 5W50. Being in Texas run the Motul 5W50, in the winter below 60F you can mix some 5W40 with 5W50 Sport for a 5W45 ratio.. Send your oil samples in for testing

I thought the issue with using a 40-weight was that the chain and turbos' heat can shear it to something like a watery 30-weight, making the 50 a better choice because it doesn't get too thin after getting beat up in the Mezger engine.

Every oil manufacture product viscosity is different. You have the US SAE standards used as guidelines. Redline oils will typically run thicker in the given published weight and when you look at the Virgin oil sample reports you can SEE the specs >>Vicosity is higher>>so it is thicker out of the botlle.
Mobil 1 synthetic will be a tad thinner than Redline AND thicker over Motul.. We do NOT want to even get close to a 30 weight between oil changes or shall I say around 4K to 5K miles... That when the oils sheer or lose there published weight.
Do your own research.. Look at the published viscosity cold and hot compare them to the oils that you want to run. Compare used oil at 3K miles or 4 k miles or 5K..
Motul is a great oil, the Sport oil at 5W50 is a great choice. For the winter driving season one could bled some 5W40.. My statement is for those that drive thru the winter. I don't..

Switched out the tiny seal, the big seal, and the filter. The housing was pretty much bone dry. Hoping that this solves the hard rattle on start up after sitting for several days.
I'll have to wait for maybe another 800 miles or so to do an oil analysis to get some useful data. Unfortunately I didn't keep a sample of the oil that was in there when I bought it from the PO... too bad.
