Is the 997 turbo adequately prepared from the factory to do track days in the summer? Any cooling issues?

Transmission fluid. It's about $700 a fill but will last a hard season at the track.

whoh! i hope i dont need that. i do about 6-8 track days a year at intermediate level and do not push hard at all. my gt3 tires (mpsc/r888) last the year with about 5000 street miles also

Cooling, I'm sure the car is fine for track use. You may want to consider upgrading the brake fluid to something like GS 610.

Sebring August 2010 Redline TA. 996GT2 with Giac Tune and GMG exhaust turned lap after lap with no issues. Several GT-r's also turned laps, usually no more that 3 as they overheated in the August Florida Sun Talking to 1 of the GT-r owners he said he didn't think the GT-r would ever be able to run multiple laps in that heat.

just read car and drivers 1 lap contest at vir and couldnt believe 08 test with gtr was faster than current gt3rs and turboS! they did say the gt3rs was theyre favorite track car to drive of all though

These threads are so utterly pointless yet there's nothing anyone can do to stop them from popping up every other day.

DRIVE BOTH, and figure out which one YOU LIKE BEST. Numbers are just that, NUMBERS. The objectivity is often questionable, the results controversial, and the playing field ever changing. Are you planning on racing a GTR or 911 at the 'ring where the difference between two pro-driver times will determine your satisfaction level? If you bought a Turbo S because it is "faster" and next year Nissan ups the performance on the GTR to make it the new "Ring King" are you going to lose sleep?

The GTR is a technologically advanced fantastic road car with amazing track capabilities. The 911 is an iconic German engineered sports car that essentially the ultimate jack of all trades. There are plenty of GTR owners who track the hell out of their cars and seem to be very happy. Plenty of Porsche guys who have had a GTR and a 911 and prefer the 911. You will never see an end to this argument.

I have a GTR and will likely have a 997 GT2 sitting next to it come spring time. I respect both cars - what makes them different and ultimately some of the things they share in common. At the end of the day you have to please yourself first, and that is what matters.

I am new to this forum and a new 2011 911 Turbo owner. I want to chime in on the GTR subject as I own one as well. I have to say that the GTR is extremely fast, if not as fast as my turbo. I can only imagine how fast the new 2012 with 530hp. Very stable and has more room than the Pcar. I use this car on long trips but find my porsche more enjoyable to drive. As far as looks...the Porsche is better looking but the GTR draws more attention, mainly because there are not as many on the road. I am in love with my Porsche but I have to give props to Nissan for building a remarkably fast car for under $100K.

10 GT3

Is the GTR faster than a Turbo probably on the ring, probably; but don't trust manufacturer numbers. No independent test has ever gotten a GTR to get close to that. In fact, the faster independent ring was by Horst von Saurma at 7:38. EVO magazine created an uproar when they tested a 10' GT3 against a 10' GTR at the ring and the GT3 beat it by 2 seconds. Nissan is not the only ones make these types of deceptive claims. GM has also been doing it for years. They take their best factory driver in a pre-production tweaked car and have even counted their time without including the front straight. Never pay attention to manufacturer claims and just trust independent reviews. I haven't seen a figure for Turbo S ring times, but the factory is claiming 7:39 for the regular Turbo PDK. Until there is an independent test we won't know for sure.

So here is the other thing, the suspension tuning on a Turbo is not as sporting as the suspension tuning on a GTR. Despite the GTR being heavier and having more turbo lag, it does have a more sorted out chassis. That doesn't mean you can't improve the suspension on a Turbo as you can.

Problem with the GTR is if you track it, as I did mine, the transmission fluid needs to be changed more frequently. the transmission fluid is $200/litre and it takes 10 litres. If you track it several times a year, that winds up to a lot of maintenance. I had the GTR along with a Z06, Ferrari 575 and a 911. During the summer, I hardly drove the Nissan and eventually traded it for a 04 Audi RS6. FWIW

Problem is I was told by Nissan Canada that installing a transmission cooler would void the warranty.
