Default Anyone upgrade from a C4S..

I was doing a little dreaming last night on ebay and pre-owned search on Porsche.com and noticed that 07/08 997 TT pricing seems to be dropping along with everything else these days. Has anyone moved into a turbo from a C4S? If so, could you point out key differences in handling, ride, performance, etc. Thanks for your input!

I had a 997 Targa 4S, not the same... but close enough. I bought a 997 Turbo coupe right after the Targa, so it was as close to an "A-B" kind of comparison as you can get.

The differences are amazing. First, the turbo "umph" of acceleration is addictive.

Second, the all wheel drive system in the Turbo is a different system. In my opinion, it simulates the famous 70/30 weight split "seat of your pants" feel of the C2 models better than the system that was on my T4S. The Turbo's system is actually inherited from the fabled 959. It is a wet clutch system, not a viscous coupled system. It's interesting to note that the latest 997.2 Carrera 4's appear to have adopted the Turbo's all wheel drive system.

One other aspect is the engine... the Turbo has the GT1 engine, not the M97 engine. It's a whole different beast, and famously reliable. There are parts in the Turbo's engine that have 964-xxx part numbers. It's been in Porsche's stable that long! The rumors are that the 2010 Turbo "face lifted" engine will go with a turbocharged version of the new 997.2 engine... too bad.

i agree with tmc-a turbo feels like a c4s with a jet engine in it. it feels twice as fast as a c4s. also a little heavier in the steering wheel.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep my eyes open for a great deal in the market. An 07 Cobalt Blue with low mileage would be appealing...

Whilst my previous 997 C4S was wonderful, the TT that I now have is sensational! As others have mentioned, the difference is huge. The TT has mounds of power (in almost ay gear) available for instant and mind blowing effortless acceleration. You'll love it.

I checked out the inventory at a dealer in NJ that had quite a few 07 TT's and 2 of them where "buy backs" from Porsche. It's pretty interesting when you read the car fax these dealers make available on their web sites. I wonder how many don't bother to read them.. Always a risk when buying pre-owned if you don't pay attention...

What was the story on the buybacks?
I've had zero problems with mine, 30k miles, knock on wood.

Hi ...

I'm new on the Turbo part of the MB, but I have driven a '07 997 C4S as my DD for the last 2 years.

The C4S is the best P-car I've driven since I started with Porsche back in 1976. I've had quite a few NA cars. I really love the 997.

But, yesterday ... I decided (emotional decision) to lease a '09 Turbo cab. What a car. It is just a total "step up" ... in everything. The power and torque are enormous jumps compared to the 997 4S.

I did a cab ... and the deal was pretty good. Of course, we all think the deal could be better. Just how were are put together. But, the 4S was about $105k the Turbo is $150k. However, the lease was just $200ish more than the 4S and add a few months.

I've always wanted a Turbo ... didn't think it would be as nice to drive in town and slowly. But, it is. And, it's pretty nice on the eyes, too. But, it's ALL ABOUT THE POWER !!

Baggerdude, saw your post on another thread, congrats! I'm making an offer on an 07 Coballt Blue tomorrow, Hope I get my price, drove one back in December and knew I had to have one. Enjoy it and don't let the CT cops give you a ticket. I heard they are generating lots of revenue for the state by writing a lot more tickets!

Thanx, Bob ...

I hope you get your deal on the Cobalt Blue. Excellent color, BTW.

I always have a Valentine 1 installed before I leave the dealership. It may not be fool proof, but it does help. Today, I was leaving for work ... came to a 4 way stop sign and saw a State Cop to my left. He turned on his left blinker .... I turned on my right and drove off. "See ya latha !" I knew I could not stay in the 35 mph limit with him behind me.

I may drive fast, but I'm not on the phone, not texting and not screwing with things as I'm down the road. And, I give plenty of distance between myself and others .... I wonder why folks are always on my donkey while I'm following a train of cars at the speed limit. Makes me nuts.

Let us know if you get the car, Bob. I'll share some more photogs when I get mine .... you do the same.

Grats on the car, baggerdude!

I got my turbo cab about 6 months ago and enjoy it everyday. I agree with what you found about it being great to drive even around town and slowly. Even on the commute, if traffic opens up a little or whatever, you can enjoy THE POWER.

Have fun!
