Default Coolant smell

I am noticing a strong coolant smell while driving when pulling up to stop lights. No leaks visible either while its running or parked. Nothing seems amiss around the coolant bottle but the smell is much stronger around the bottle area. Level is ok. Temperatures are normal. Is there a vent tube or something on the system? Anyone had the same experience? Will go to dealer when I get the oil changed in a few weeks but thought i'd ask.

Those overflow bottles were known to crack and leak on the 996 cars, looks like the same design on the 997. Keep an eye on the level and get it to the shop when you can.

I had a similar issue. I could smell coolant from outside the car. Mentioned to dealer but they could not find anything obvious so we left it for a few months. One day, coolant was low enough the warning light came on, brought it to dealer, they found that something cracked and but managed to fixed it all, not a simple job though I was told.

Dealer is MCL Porsche in Vancouver BC, Canada. Ask for John (the head mechanic) for the coolant fix on the silver tip 997 turbo and he'll tell your dealer what's wrong I'm sure.

Good luck.

Thanks W211, she goes to the dealer tomorrow so will let you know, and will also be giving them your dealer input and info.

Update. Well the good news is they found the leak, the bad news is the engine is coming out Apparently it is coming from one of the hoses on top of the motor at the back and was pooling on the top of the engine then evaporating hence no visible leak.

Its the "dropping" part that worries me I asked if that ment I got a free oil change, and they indicated that you could drop the engine without draining the oil...so does that mean no more oil tank?

There's an oil tank - you can see it by looking up under the right rear wheel or looking where the oil filler tube goes. They must plug it or maybe "dropped" doesn't mean complete removal.

The entire motor drops out like a cassette. Most everything stays intact save for disconnecting some cooling and electrical lines

I am having them change the oil anyway as its a year old and has 6000 miles. I was just angling to get an oil change on Uncle Porsche
They have had it since last Friday so hope to get it back soon.

Oh boy this is turning into a real disaster Just got back to the US today and picked up my car from the dealer all smiles ready for the weekend. Drive 20 mins to the house and pull into the garage and as I get out and look back, I see her evacuating her bowls all over the damn floor Frigging coolant everywhere. To top this they also scratched the rear bumper Currently waiting for Porsche roadside assistance to come and get her.
